Patrick Mahomes has not said a word publicly about when he plans to return, but a short and symbolic social media post has been enough to spark renewed debate around his recovery and the future of the Kansas City Chiefs.
The quarterback, sidelined since tearing his ACL last month, shared a pair of contrasting images that left fans searching for meaning as his rehabilitation continues.
Mahomes has been out since suffering the season-ending injury to his left knee on December 14. The loss of their franchise quarterback proved too much for Kansas City to overcome.
The Chiefs missed the postseason for the first time since 2014, a stunning outcome for a team that had grown accustomed to deep playoff runs and championship expectations.
That disappointment followed an already draining stretch for the organization. The Chiefs were still carrying the weight of a Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Philadelphia Eagles last February, a defeat that lingered longer than anticipated.
Instead of rebounding, Kansas City‘s season unraveled, ending with Mahomes watching from the sideline.
Surgery followed shortly after the injury, and the expectation across the league remains that Mahomes will be back under center for the start of the 2026 season.
Even so, any update tied to his health draws attention, especially when it comes directly from him. That is what made his recent Instagram post so closely scrutinized.
Mahomes shared two photos with his 6.5 million followers. One showed him walking off the field after a loss earlier in the season, shoulders slumped and frustration clear.
The other captured a familiar sight: Mahomes celebrating a Chiefs touchdown with energy and emotion. The only caption was a ticking clock.
The lack of explanation left room for interpretation. Some fans saw confidence and patience in the message. Others wondered whether it hinted at a longer road back. “Comeback will be legendary,” one fan wrote. Another offered a more cautious take, asking, “Could mean a longer comeback?”
Andy Reid’s latest update on Mahomes
While Mahomes has kept his thoughts private, head coach Andy Reid has been more forthcoming about the quarterback’s progress.
Speaking earlier this week, Reid offered reassurance about how Mahomes has approached the early phase of rehabilitation.
“First of all, he’s doing great for just being three weeks out or so,” Reid said.
“He’ll go ahead and most likely stay up here [in Kansas City] for the majority of the time rehabbing. He’s been just in there grinding. That’s what I can tell you. Right now, he’s in that early process where you got to really hit it hard.
“It’s not necessarily a fun thing to do every day, but the important thing is that you show up, keep coming back for more, and he’s been doing that.”
