How likely is Patrick Mahomes to return by Week One after ACL injury?

Patrick Mahomes gave the Kansas City Chiefs a sense of relief after what initially felt like a worst-case scenario. His ACL injury came at a tense point in the season, adding uncertainty to a team that was already struggling to find consistency. Beyond the immediate impact, there were real concerns about how the injury could carry over into next season, given the long and careful rehab process required for a full recovery.

Now, a few months later, that concern has started to shift into cautious optimism. Mahomes recently shared a video of himself throwing again, explaining that he’s taking things day by day and already feeling good getting the ball out of his hands. It’s a positive sign, especially just three months after the injury-but it doesn’t fully answer the biggest question surrounding his return.

What a typical ACL recovery timeline tells

ACL recoveries for NFL players usually take around 9 to 12 months, depending on the severity of the injury, the player’s position, and how their body responds to rehab. Mahomes has openly said he’s aiming to be ready for Week One, which would put him right around the nine-month mark-on the faster end, but still within a realistic window.

That said, being able to throw in a controlled setting is very different from being cleared for full-contact football. Quarterbacks rely heavily on stability, footwork, and mobility, all of which take time to rebuild after an ACL tear. Even if Mahomes progresses without setbacks, the Chiefs’ medical staff will likely take a cautious approach before putting him back on the field.

Mahomes gave fans a reason to feel optimistic after sharing a new throwing video and signaling steady progress in his recovery. While throwing on his own is still far from being game-ready, his goal of returning by Week One remains intact-a timeline that would mark roughly nine months of rehab. It’s a quicker turnaround, but not unheard of, and it’s enough to make fans believe there’s a real chance.

Will he actually be ready for Week One?

The short answer: it’s possible, but not guaranteed. Mahomes’ early progress is encouraging, and elite athletes often recover faster thanks to top-tier medical care and conditioning. Still, ACL recoveries are unpredictable, and teams tend to prioritize long-term health over rushing a return.

For now, the Chiefs-and their fans-can take this latest update as a step in the right direction. But until Mahomes is fully cleared for contact and game speed, the question of whether he’ll be at 100% for Week One remains open.
