Patrick Mahomes has been on an emotional rollercoaster in 2025 by experiencing heartbreak and joy within weeks, most recently with the death of his grandfather shortly after Super Bowl LIX. But why did his mother call for the family to be thankful after such a loss?
After the Kansas City Chiefs‘ crushing defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans, Larry “Randy” Martin, the 29-year-old’s grandfather, died following a period of ill health that saw the 78-year-old in and out of the hospital for months.
Whilst found solace in celebrating his daughter Sterling Skye’s fourth birthday on Thursday, the celebration of his eldest child came just one day after the funeral of his maternal grandparent on February 19, but the family shouldn’t be sad according to Randi Mahomes.
Randi shared a message on X.com (formerly Twitter), stating, “Today was a good day to be thankful.”
Rather than the family feeling downhearted with the loss of such a key figure, the 49-year-old is calling for them to remember his impact on their lives and to celebrate the person he was and that they got to share time with him.
Amid her mourning, she shared a heartfelt message about her granddaughter by posting on Instagram. Randi expressed her love for Sterling, writing, “Happy 4th birthday to my granddaughter Sterling Skye. I love you forever.”
Sterling Skye is the eldest of Mahomes’ children, followed by her younger siblings, Patrick Lavon III, affectionately known as “Bronze,” and their newborn sister, Golden Raye, who was born last month during the NFL Wild Card Round.
Patrick fulfils grandfather’s wish
Patrick Mahomes was seen publicly for the first time since the Super Bowl at Martin’s funeral in Henderson, Texas as exclusive images captured by thedailymail.com showed the quarterback with a fresh haircut, appearing noticeably shorter at the top.
He was accompanied by his younger brother, Jackson, as they mourned their beloved grandfather despite enduring personal loss, the Mahomes family remains strong and Patrick knows he helped fulfil one of Randy‘s final desires.
Although he didn’t manage to win the Super Bowl, suffering a 40-22 defeat on the night, he did manage to throw for three touchdowns for 257 yards and it turns out his grandparent wanted to watch him play one last time.
“I know that it has meant a lot to him,” Randi told PEOPLE. “And I think he’s hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play.
“I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud. And my mom was very proud and his other grandparents [were too].”
