Patrick Mahomes losing Matt Nagy could actually resurrect his career

Early on in the 2025 season, it became a bit of a worry that Andy Reid could potentially lose both of his coordinators following the year. The Kansas City Chiefs were off to an inconsistent start, but Patrick Mahomes was playing at an MVP level and the defense was flying around the ball. That led to head coach rumors surrounding both Matt Nagy and Steve Spagnuolo.

Then, the wheels fell off for the Chiefs, on both sides of the ball. While that dampened Spagnuolo’s HC expectations, Nagy seems to have come out unscathed. The OC has several interviews lined up with head coach-needy teams, and he appears to be a legit candidate to be a head coach once again – even after a middling first go-around with the Chicago Bears.

While one would assume that losing Nagy will hurt Mahomes, due to a lack of continuity on offense, it might actually benefit the quarterback. The numbers don’t lie when it comes to Mahomes’ performance with and without Nagy as offensive coordinator.

Is Matt Nagy holding Patrick Mahomes back?

Nagy took over as Chiefs OC before the 2023 season. Mahomes was coming off of an MVP season with no less than 37 passing touchdowns in four of his first five seasons as a starter. Once Nagy took over, Mahomes didn’t surpass 27 passing touchdowns in any of the three seasons working with Nagy as OC.

Obviously, that also led to more modest output from the Chiefs offense as a whole. While there were external factors that contributed to the drop-off in production for Mahomes and the offense, it’s fair to wonder why Nagy is getting so much interest from other teams. The Las Vegas Raiders, Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals all have interviews lined up with him.

Perhaps Nagy leaving is what Mahomes needs to get back to his MVP form of 2018 and 2022. The numbers certainly point to that being the case.
