A pair of carefully timed social media posts from Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill has sent the NFL rumor mill into overdrive, prompting renewed questions about whether the Kansas City Chiefs could someday reunite one of the most dangerous quarterback-receiver duos in league history.
On Tuesday afternoon, Mahomes shared a post on X featuring an alarm-clock emoji alongside two photos from road games earlier this season.
One showed him walking off the field in Dallas on Thanksgiving, while the other captured him celebrating a first-half rushing touchdown in Jacksonville.
Both games ended in 31-28 losses, and notably, they were the only times Kansas City wore all-white uniforms this season.
At face value, the message looked like motivation. Mahomes is just 22 days removed from season-ending surgery to repair ACL and LCL tears in his left knee, and the alarm clock could easily symbolize an early wake-up call and commitment to the grind of rehabilitation.
However, the timing raised eyebrows. Just 22 minutes after Mahomes posted, Hill shared a nearly identical message of his own, photos of himself wearing the all-white uniforms of the Miami Dolphins.
Analyst Price Carter was quick to suggest the posts might not be coincidental.
Why a potential reunion suddenly feels possible
The speculation grows louder when considering the broader context surrounding Hill and the Dolphins.
Miami recently fired general manager Chris Grier, beginning a search for new leadership that could reshape the franchise’s long-term vision.
Financial details also matter. According to Over the Cap, Hill‘s four-year, $120 million extension signed on Aug. 4, 2024 includes three voidable years from 2027-29.
His base salary in 2026 jumps dramatically from $10 million to $29.9 million, a structure that could make trade discussions more appealing once a new general manager is in place.
That scenario naturally brings Kansas City into the conversation. With Brett Veach overseeing roster construction for the Chiefs, any opportunity to reconnect Mahomes with his former No. 1 target would at least merit discussion, even if the odds remain long.
While fans debate hidden meanings, the immediate focus for Mahomes is recovery. Head coach Andy Reid provided a detailed update this week, emphasizing the quarterback’s discipline and commitment.
“First of all,” he said, “he’s doing great for just being three weeks out or so, and he’ll go ahead and most likely stay up here for the majority of the time in rehab. And he and Julie, she’s the person that does all that, our PT, he has a lot of trust in her. And he’s been just in there grinding. I mean, that’s what I can tell you, and I think that’ll just continue until we get started again.
“Not that he won’t take a break here or there, but right now, he’s in that early process where you got to really hit it hard. And, it’s not necessarily a fun thing to do every day, but the important thing is that you show up; you keep coming back for more. And he’s been doing that.”
The value of Mahomes became painfully clear late in the season. Without him for the final three games, the Chiefs scored just one touchdown and became the first NFL team in 16 years to fail to reach 170 offensive yards in three consecutive games, a drought last seen with the Oakland Raiders and JaMarcus Russell in 2009.
For now, the alarm clock may simply represent rehab and resolve. But with Hill echoing the message, it’s hard to ignore the possibility that something more, however distant, could be ticking in the background.
