Paige Bueckers talks about her struggle to adjust to life with Dallas Wings despite stellar rookie season

Paige Bueckers, the top pick for the Dallas Wings in the 2025 WNBA Draft, arrived with sky-high expectations: a national champion background, immense hype, and a belief that her dominance at college would carry straight into the pros.

But less than halfway through her first WNBA season, Bueckers is admitting that the transition has hit her harder than she thought. According to her, being a rookie in a new league involves far more than scoring and stats.

“Yeah, it’s hard. I went from being the vet or the senior on the team to where everybody looked to me as the voice, as the leader,” Bueckers said.

“To where I’m coming into a new organization with a lot of new coaching staff, mostly new team, new GM. and I’m a rookie,” Bueckers said recently when reflecting on life as a pro.

The numbers show she’s capable – averaging around 19.2 points per game – but Bueckers knows that in the WNBA, success isn’t only about individual performance.

Her 5.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game reflect an effort to adapt to a different style of play than her college days, though she admits that the mental adjustment has been just as challenging as the physical one.

“I’m learning every single day what it looks like to show up to work every day. Be an adult,” she added.

“I had an eye appointment yesterday and a dentist appointment yesterday, and I went to them by myself without my parents. So, like it’s a learning process,” she said.

Adjustment beyond the court

For Bueckers, life as a WNBA rookie means balancing more than just basketball. It’s about learning to live independently, manage pressures, and accept that her role in a pro hierarchy is different from her leadership role at college.

Admitting this struggle doesn’t mean she’s backing down. In earlier interviews, Bueckers acknowledged that the pro game is a different beast.

“I feel like I’m adjusting every single game. It’s not like I have it figured out,” she said.

“There’s learning curves to it and there’s ups and downs to it, but as much as I can I’m just trying to learn every day, watch a lot of film, breaking stuff down to where I’m reading the game in a different way.”

Bueckers thrives despite WNBA pressures

As Bueckers works to find her footing, she’s also navigating a difficult environment.

The W season has coincided with stalled negotiations over the league’s collective bargaining agreement, adding uncertainty around salaries and the long-term future of the league. That lack of stability only magnifies the pressure on rookies like her trying to adjust, develop, and lead.

Despite the struggles, Bueckers has shown the correct mindset to be a success with Dallas Wings, and her coaches believe in her path.

Wings staff have spoken about the importance of giving Bueckers time, allowing her to grow into her role as a leader and build confidence on both ends of the floor.

Bueckers has confronted the harsh reality that being a professional means more than shining in college: it means adapting, growing, and learning to carry responsibilities off the court as much as on it.

Whether she thrives or struggles from here will depend not just on her talent – but on her strength, maturity, and ability to build something lasting in Dallas.
