NFL injury expert Jesse Morse confirms devastating news for George Kittle after Achilles injury

Misfortune struck the San Francisco 49ers once again at the worst possible moment of the season. During the first half of Sunday’s NFC Wild Card game against the Philadelphia Eagles, star tight end George Kittle was forced to leave the field after making his first catch of the contest, immediately raising concern on the San Francisco sideline and among fans.

Kittle went down following a play along the sideline and remained on the ground for several minutes before being carted off the field at Lincoln Financial Field. He was later seen hopping on one foot as he made his way into the locker room – an image that quickly signaled a serious lower-leg injury.

49ers confirm Achilles rupture

Shortly after, the 49ers officially confirmed that Kittle suffered an “Achilles injury” ending any speculation about the nature of the injury and delivering a devastating blow to San Francisco’s playoff hopes.

Achilles injuries are among the most severe in professional football, often requiring surgery and an extensive rehabilitation process that can sideline players for most, if not all, of the following season.

A specialist’s assessment: “Absolutely devastating”

Even before the team’s announcement, concern was mounting within the medical community. Dr. Jesse Morse, a respected NFL injury specialist, shared a blunt assessment on social media that ultimately aligned with the team’s diagnosis:

“George Kittle. Torn right Achilles tendon. Awful injury. Absolutely devastating for the 32-year-old.”

According to Morse, the mechanism of injury, Kittle’s immediate reaction, and the way he exited the field were all consistent with an Achilles rupture, one of the most feared diagnoses for aging skill-position players.

What this means for Kittle’s future

For a player of Kittle’s age and physically demanding style – defined by explosiveness, elite blocking, and punishing yards after the catch – an Achilles rupture carries significant short- and long-term implications. Recovery timelines typically range from nine to 12 months, and a full return to pre-injury performance is far from guaranteed, particularly for veterans.

While modern surgical techniques have improved outcomes, many players experience a decline in explosiveness and lower-body strength after such injuries.

The confirmed Achilles rupture adds to a season already marred by injuries for the 49ers as a whole. San Francisco has been among the NFL’s most injury-plagued teams in 2025 – a trend that has now extended into the postseason.
