NFL Free Agency 2026: When it starts, deadline, salary caps, and what’s changing this year

The NFL is gearing up for one of the busiest times on its calendar: free agency. With just a few days to go before the player market officially opens for the 2026 season, teams are already fine-tuning their strategies to strengthen their rosters and compete for the title.

Although NFL free agency will officially begin on Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. ET, the real activity begins earlier with the so-called tampering period.

The negotiation period begins before free agency

The so-called legal tampering stage will begin on Monday, March 9 at 12:00 p.m. (ET). During this period, franchises can talk to players’ agents who will become unrestricted free agents.

Although contracts cannot be officially signed at that time, teams can negotiate deals and have terms ready to be formalized when the market officially opens.

This means that, when March 11 arrives, many deals will already be practically closed and only the signature will be missing to make them official.

The start of the NFL year

Wednesday, March 11 not only marks the start of free agency, but also the official start of the 2026 league year within the National Football League.

From that moment on, teams will be able to:

  • Officially sign free agents.
  • Make trades between franchises.
  • Confirm agreements that were negotiated during the legal tampering period.

According to the NFL itself, free agency is one of the most decisive periods of the preseason as many franchises rebuild or strengthen their rosters with a view to the following season.

The most sought-after free agents on the market

The league’s official website has also released a list of the 101 best free agents available, compiled by analyst Gregg Rosenthal.

The ranking takes into account factors such as:

  • Talent shortage in certain positions
  • Player ages
  • Market value
  • Sports impact on the field

However, Rosenthal himself has clarified that the list does not seek to predict who will sign the most lucrative contracts, but rather to highlight the players who could have the greatest impact on their new franchises.

What is the salary cap for 2026?

NFL set salary cap at $301.2 million in 2026. Total projected cost for players, including benefits, is $378.8 million.

The wide receiver tag remains the second most lucrative franchise tag at $27.3 million, while the quarterback tag is $43.9 million.

A market that can change the season

Free agency often redefines the competitive landscape of the league, as many teams find this period an opportunity to strengthen key positions without waiting for the Draft.

With rumors, negotiations and possible surprise moves, free agency promises to once again be one of the most intense times on the National Football League calendar heading into the 2026 season.

Key facts about the news:

  • March 9 marks the start of the negotiation period, or “legal tampering”.
  • March 11 at 4:00 p.m. (ET) is the official start of free agency.
  • The 2026 NFL year also begins on the same day.
  • Teams will be able to sign players and make trades.
  • The league published a ranking of the 101 best free agents available
