NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Receives Extension, Keeping Him In Job Through 2030

As another NFL season kicks off, the league’s top executive isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

The NFL owners have officially inked commissioner Roger Goodell to a four-year extension, ensuring he remains in charge of the league for the foreseeable future, ESPN reported Sunday. With the extension, Goodell will be the NFL’s commissioner through the end of the 2030 season as his contract will expire on March 31, 2031. It’s the fifth time Goodell has received an extension during his time as commissioner.

By the time this extension concludes, Goodell will have served as NFL commissioner for nearly a quarter-century at 24 years. He has long since surpassed his predecessor, Paul Tagliabue, who led the league for 17 years.

News of Goodell’s extension became official Sunday morning with a memo from New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who serves as chairman of the NFL Compensation Committee and made the announcement.

“Throughout the negotiation process, the Committee worked closely with an independent third-party compensation consultant and outside counsel to structure a deal that aligns Roger’s compensation with the League’s long-term interests and success,” Kraft said in a memo to the other owners on Sunday. “To that end, the agreement is heavily performance based, with more than 95% of the total compensation tied to Roger’s and the NFL’s performance measured against various metrics and at the discretion of the Compensation Committee.”

Goodell has helped expand the NFL’s reach since he became the league’s commissioner in 2006. He’s been at the forefront of the NFL’s continued initiative to grow the game internationally, even saying that the league could have a team outside of the United States sometime down the line.  He’s also helped the NFL land massive media rights deals, leading the league’s revenue to grow from $8 billion in 2010 to over $23 billion in 2024.

Goodell has also managed to secure labor stability in recent years by negotiating a 10-year collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA in 2020. When his contract expires in 2031, the league will face a major turning point, as that is actually the exact year the current CBA expires.

As the 107th NFL season kicks off, the league’s front office enjoys some strong stability.
