NFL and Cowboys star Logan Wilson announces retirement at 29 after six stellar seasons

A quiet Wednesday in Dallas became a reflective moment for Logan Wilson. The linebacker, recently released by the Dallas Cowboys, confirmed via Instagram that he will not be playing in the 2026 season and is officially stepping away from football.

Wilson, who turns 30 this summer, framed his announcement with gratitude, focusing on the people who shaped his career.

“There are so many people that I would like to thank, and I know I will probably miss a few, but first and foremost, thank you to my family,” Wilson wrote.

Wilson continued his message by recognizing numerous members of the Bengals organization who played roles behind the scenes.

The linebacker leaves the NFL after six seasons, a period that included steady production and leadership roles on and off the field. Known for his sideline-to-sideline range and football intelligence, Wilson earned a reputation as a reliable presence in the middle of the defense.

From defensive anchor to sudden exit

The Cincinnati Bengals selected Wilson in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft after a standout collegiate career at the University of Wyoming.

Over the next several seasons, he developed into a centerpiece of Cincinnati’s defense, starting regularly and helping the franchise reach Super Bowl LVI along with consecutive appearances in the AFC Championship Game during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

During his prime, Wilson became known for his tackling consistency and instincts in coverage. He recorded at least 100 tackles in four straight seasons beginning in 2021, establishing himself as one of the team’s most dependable defenders.

The Bengals rewarded him with a four-year, $36 million contract extension ahead of the 2023 season, a move that signaled their belief that he would remain a core part of the defense moving forward.

But the trajectory of Wilson‘s career shifted over the past two seasons.

In 2024, a knee injury forced him onto injured reserve late in the year, interrupting what had previously been a remarkably steady run of production.

The following season brought another challenge as younger linebackers began to take on larger roles in the Bengals‘ defensive rotation.

Frustrated by a reduced workload, Wilson requested a trade during the 2025 campaign.

The Bengals eventually dealt him to the Dallas Cowboys in November for a late-round draft pick, hoping the change of scenery might benefit both sides.

Wilson appeared in a handful of games down the stretch for Dallas but struggled to regain the form that once made him a defensive leader in Cincinnati. The Cowboys ultimately released him in February as part of a defensive overhaul.

That release left Wilson facing a crossroads just weeks before the start of the 2026 league year. Rather than pursue another opportunity, he opted to walk away from the game.

Though his career ended sooner than many expected, Wilson leaves behind a résumé that includes key contributions to one of the Bengals‘ most successful eras in recent history. For several seasons, he was at the center of a defense that helped transform Cincinnati into a contender.
