The NBA‘s spotlight has shifted to Cooper Flagg, whose performance for the Dallas Mavericks has drawn attention despite the team’s uneven start.
The Detroit Pistons star, Cade Cunningham, weighed in on the teenager’s early season impact.
Detroit leads the Eastern Conference with a 21-5 record, positioning themselves 2.5 games ahead of the New York Knicks.
Meanwhile, Dallas has struggled, sitting 12th in the West with a 10-17 record, highlighting the challenge for the young rookie.
“Man, he’s been killing it,” Cunningham said. “He just had like what, 42, the other night? To be at his age doing that already, he’s got a bright future ahead. We already knew that coming in. That’s special.
“I think he’s been doing a great job. A lot of different things have came at him as far as responsibilities and I think more than anything, through his struggles, he’s kept composure and handed it well.
“I think the mindset is something that’s gonna get him a long way in the league, for sure.”
Flagg is averaging 18.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.3 steals per contest. He is shooting just under 50 percent from the field but struggles from three-point range, converting only 25 percent.
But facing Detroit‘s physical defense will be a key test on December 23 as the side head to the American Airlines Center to take on Flagg‘s Mavericks, who continue to adjust to life without Luka Doncic.
The 18-year-old’s responsibilities as a rookie are heavy, but Cunningham emphasizes his composure and maturity under pressure.
The young forward’s ability to handle adversity has impressed veteran players around the league, making him one of the most watched rookies this season.
Rookie Flagg breaks out for 42 points
Flagg recently made history by scoring 42 points in a 140-133 overtime loss to the Utah Jazz, becoming the youngest NBA player ever to surpass 40 points in a game whilst he added seven rebounds and six assists in the performance.
Only Cliff Robinson (45), GG Jackson (44), and LeBron James (43) have scored more as teenagers as he also tied Mark Aguirre‘s record for most points by a Mavericks rookie in a single game.
At 6-foot-8, Flagg showed the versatility expected from a number one draft pick, delivering across scoring, rebounding, and playmaking. The Mavericks held leads of 75-71 at halftime and 124-116 late in the fourth quarter but ultimately fell in overtime.
Keyonte George and Lauri Markkanen led the Jazz, with 37 and 33 points respectively, sealing Utah‘s 10th win of the season.
Dallas remains 12th in the Western Conference, emphasizing the uphill battle Flagg faces despite his individual brilliance.
Flagg‘s was previously Maine Player of the Year in 2021 at Nokomis Regional and later starred at Montverde Academy, earning 2022 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year and 2024 National High School Player of the Year honors.
He also contributed to USA‘s Under-17 World Cup victory in 2022, making the all-tournament team.
At Duke University in 2024-25, he averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists, helping lead the Blue Devils to the Final Four while earning National College Player of the Year recognition.
