NBA icon Charles Barkley nears personal fitness target after life-changing medical intervention

The era of the “Round Mound of Rebound” appears to be reaching its final chapter as Charles Barkley nears the completion of a total physical transformation. The NBA legend, whose weight has been a frequent topic of self-deprecating humor and public discussion for decades, is currently operating at a level of health that seemed improbable just a few years ago.

During a recent guest appearance on the program Pardon The Interruption, former Philadelphia 76ers star Barkley provided an update on his progress, revealing that he has successfully dropped from a starting weight of 355 pounds down to a lean 270 pounds.

With his ultimate goal of 265 pounds now just five pounds away, Barkley is already contemplating the long-term maintenance of his new physique.

This radical shift in health was not merely a matter of vanity but a response to a sobering medical assessment.

Around three years ago, Barkley‘s physician delivered a blunt warning, informing the 1993 MVP that he simply “wasn’t gonna be around” for much longer if he failed to gain control over his physical condition.

This ultimatum served as the catalyst for a journey that saw Barkley publicly debut a much slimmer frame at the start of the 2025/26 NBA season.

While he initially drew laughs by jokingly thanking his medical team for his “amazing weight loss” during a television broadcast, the underlying process has been a rigorous combination of clinical assistance and personal discipline.

Clinical assistance meets behavioral change in Barkley’s regimen

The logistical reality of Barkley‘s weight loss involved navigating the complexities of modern pharmacology. The Hall of Famer has been open about his use of GLP-1 receptor agonists to facilitate his body’s metabolism.

He initially found success using the drug Mounjaro, but the journey hit a logistical snag due to widespread pharmaceutical shortages.

To maintain his momentum, Barkley transitioned his treatment to Zepbound, working in coordination with the telehealth platform Road.co to manage his prescriptions.

“I weigh 270. I started doing with Road.co, and I started doing Zepbound at 355. I’m at 270, and I want to get to 265,” Barkley said when asked how much he weighs. “So I’m right where I want to be.”

As he approaches his target weight, Barkley has established a clear strategy for his future, which includes an intentional departure from the medication once his goal is achieved.

A difficult test ahead

He intends to test the durability of his new habits by stepping away from the clinical support to observe how his body reacts to the lifestyle changes he has implemented.

“But what’s going to happen, Tony and Mike, when I get to 265? I’m going to get off the drug because I don’t think anybody wants to be on drugs their entire life.

“I’mma take a month off and see what happens with my body because even though I’m taking a shot, I’ve changed my eating habits and I’m working out.

“That’s the to me that’s the biggest misconception, the notion that you can just take a shot and lose weight. I had to change my eating habits, and I had to start working out.

“But I’m very excited about where my body is now,” Barkley added.
