Muhammad Ali’s grandson Nico Ali Walsh is no longer heartbroken and celebrates his new victory with his grandfather’s enemy

In a personal vindication after suffering a defeat to Juan Carlos Guerra Jr. in February 2025 at Madison Square Garden in New York, Nico Ali Walsh, the grandson of Muhammad Ali, defeated Ghana’s Ebenezer Sowah by majority decision on Friday night at the Sipopo Conference Center in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.Nico Ali Walsh has a winning record with 11 wins, five by knockout, and defeats to Sona Akale and Juan Carlos Guerra Jr. However, he surprisingly decided to dedicate his recent victory over Sowah to the legendary George Foreman, who died on March 21 and was an important rival for his grandfather Muhammad Ali.

“I want to dedicate this fight to the great George Foreman, now deceased. A warrior and a hero to many, including myself. He fought on this African soil with my family 50 years ago. Rest in peace, champion,” said Nico Ali, who thus paid tribute to the fight his grandfather had against Foreman in Africa in 1974.

Nico Ali Walsh regains confidence

Walsh recognized Sowah as a strong rival whom he respects, as he had a record of 7-0-1 with seven knockouts, and before fighting the Ghanaian, Nico recalled that he had often seen the aforementioned fight against Foreman: “That was repeated for the whole family while growing up,” Walsh confessed and added that he has also seen the documentary ‘When We Were Kings with Ali himself’.

The victory will help Nico Walsh regain confidence, as after losing in February to Juan Carlos Guerra, he said in an interview with The Ring that his performance was hampered by a recovery from a shoulder injury.

“I felt like I couldn’t pull the trigger with my left hand,” Walsh Ali said, adding without making excuses for his second defeat: “I feel like I did enough, but it’s no excuse. It’s my fault.”
