Moses Itauma may have just blown his chance at Oleksandr Usyk title fight

As the king of the heavyweight division, everyone is waiting to see what Oleksandr Usyk is going to do next. It’s now been nearly six months since he last fought, a dominant knockout win over Daniel Dubois to defend his various titles yet again. But we still don’t know what his next move will truly be.

We have an idea, as it was recently reported that he’s eyeing a fight against Deontay Wilder next. After that would come one or two more fights before he calls it quits. Given that he’s already beaten Dubois, Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua twice, none of them seem like logical opponents for those final few Usyk fights. With fans wanting to see Usyk box against new blood, the name Moses Itauma has frequently been brought up.

The rising star has made quick work of all of his first 13 opponents, with his recent win being the most impressive. Itauma knocked out veteran Dillian Whyte within the first round and has shot himself up the heavyweight rankings. Even Usyk himself has said he’s been impressed by Itauma. Naturally, that led to rumors the two could square off before Usyk retires.

Moses Itauma suffers injury, sees upcoming fight postponed until late March

Now, that’s looking more unlikely than before. Itauma was getting ready to fight against Jermaine Franklin on January 24, but an injury in camp has forced the bout to be postponed until March 28. Usyk is still without a fight date, so perhaps the extended timeline won’t affect a future bout between the Ukrainian and Itauma. But Uysk is about to turn 39 years old and he’s clearly already thinking about the end of his career.

Fans want to see Usyk take on Itauma, but they also want him to face off against the likes of Agit Kabayel, Filip Hrgovic and Fabio Wardley. Whether Itauma gets the chance over any of those three remains to be seen. A trilogy fight against Fury could still come to fruition as well, pushing Itauma to the back of the line.
