According to reports from Jeff Passan, Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have agreed to place both pitchers on non-disciplinary leave without pay.
The move means an immediate end to the payments they were receiving while awaiting trial. Previously, both had been suspended with pay since July 2025, when the investigation began.
Accusations of manipulation and links to gambling
The case is particularly delicate because of the nature of the allegations. According to investigations, Clase was allegedly involved in a scheme that involved the manipulation of up to 48 matches between 2023 and 2025.
Authorities suspect that both he and Ortiz received money from gamblers in exchange for altering specific pitches, including speed and execution at specific moments in the game.
In Ortiz’s case, his alleged involvement dates back to June 2025, linking him directly to the same scheme.

At 28 years of age, Clase was considered one of the best closers in MLB. After starting his career with the Texas Rangers, he established himself in Cleveland as a key part of the bullpen.
