Missiles over Dubai: Rio Ferdinand details family’s fear during Middle East conflict

Former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand has opened up about the harrowing experience his family faced during missile strikes in Dubai, shedding light on the toll of living amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The former England defender, who relocated with his wife Kate and their three children last year, described nights spent in a bunker, trying to maintain calm while explosions reverberated above their home.

Ferdinand, 47, and his family moved to Dubai last August, seeking a fresh start away from the public scrutiny of football life in England. Joining a growing list of celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan, the Ferdinands were drawn to Dubai’s reputation as a secure, luxurious haven for high-profile residents.

However, the recent escalation of hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has dramatically upended that sense of safety. The family’s luxury home has effectively become a shelter, with their daily routine replaced by uncertainty and constant vigilance.

The conflict intensified after airstrikes carried out by the United States and Israel targeted key Iranian officials, leading to retaliation by Iran with a barrage of ballistic missiles and drones across the region.

Dubai, a city known for its glimmering skyscrapers and lavish lifestyle, found itself under the shadow of these attacks. The strikes forced residents, including the Ferdinands, to adapt quickly to an unprecedented lockdown scenario.

Life in lockdown

Speaking on his podcast, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the football legend revealed how stressful the situation had become for the family.

“It’s frightening when you hear missiles, planes and fighter jets… and you’re hearing big bombs,” he said, describing the surreal terror of living through the attacks. Ferdinand explained the challenge of shielding his children from fear while remaining calm himself.

He also noted that the family had tried to maintain some sense of normalcy, even doing home workouts together to preserve their mental and physical health during confinement.

Kate Ferdinand took to social media to provide reassurance, thanking followers for their messages and confirming that they were safe. She praised the UAE government for its efforts to protect residents, despite admitting that the attacks had initially left her speechless.

She wrote: “Thank you for all of your messages and sorry for the silence… We are safe. The government are doing an amazing job of keeping it that way and despite my nerves I feel we are in very safe hands.”

Authorities in Dubai and across the UAE have responded swiftly, issuing emergency alerts, advising residents to take shelter, and deploying defensive systems to intercept missiles and drones. The strikes have already caused civilian casualties and injuries, intensifying concerns about the region’s stability.

The experience serves as a stark reminder of how quickly international conflict can affect even those who seek refuge far from the epicenter of hostilities.
