Mike McDaniel declined to coach Shedeur Sanders and the Browns; his future remains undecided

The Cleveland Browns continue their search for their next head coach, with the latest development being that one of their top candidates has declined to proceed with the hiring process. Meanwhile, time keeps ticking for Shedeur Sanders, who still doesn’t know what his role will be during the upcoming season.

Mike McDaniel withdraws from the Browns’ options

This Tuesday, former Miami Dolphins head coachMike McDaniel informed the Browns that he was withdrawing his name from the process. Cleveland had already held a virtual meeting with McDaniel last season, and an in-person interview was already scheduled for Wednesday in Berea.

McDaniel notified the team that he was not interested in the vacancy-meaning he also wasn’t interested in taking charge of an offense that could likely feature Shedeur Sanders at the quarterback position. Now, all signs point to him potentially becoming the new offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, according to reports.

In Cleveland, they liked the offensive work McDaniel did over the last four seasons in Miami with a limited quarterback like Tua Tagovailoa, along with a veteran Tyreek Hill. He helped develop Jaylen Waddle, and his running game was always among the best in the league despite not having an elite running back.

Although his arrival to the Chargers could be announced soon, Tom Pelissero has reported that it’s not a done deal yet:

“No deal has been signed. A head coaching opportunity could still materialize. But the OC job Mike McDaniel wants is with Justin Herbert in L.A.“

So, we’ll have to wait and see if this ultimately becomes the destination for the head coach the Cleveland Browns desired.
