Mike McCallum, a famous former boxer and member of the ‘Hall of Fame’ since 2003 known as ‘The Bodysnatcher’, has died at the age of 68 in Las Vegas on his way to the gym.

The Jamaica Observer reports that Mike McCallum was found lifeless by the roadside, after stopping his car because he was feeling unwell.

The Las Vegas Police Department has not released the causes of the Jamaican boxer’s death.

Mike McCallum, three-time world boxing champion: Why was he called ‘The Bodysnatcher’?

Mike McCallum, who was nicknamed ‘The Bodysnatcher’ for his brutal and blunt body punches, was the first Jamaican boxer to win a world title.

He did so in 1984 when he defeated Irishman Sean Mannion at New York’s Madison Square Garden to lift the WBA junior middleweight crown.

McCallum, who had a record of 49 wins (36 by KO), 5 losses and 1 draw, also won the WBA middleweight and WBC light heavyweight titles.

Jamaican government says goodbye to boxer Mike McCallum

Jamaica’s Minister of Sport Olivia Grange shared her dismay at McCallum’s death: “It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Jamaican three-time world boxing champion, Michael McKenzie McCallum. I express my personal condolences to his mother, siblings and children. On behalf of the Ministry of Sport, I take this opportunity to express our condolences to the family and friends of this legendary Jamaican.”
