Miami vies to host Finalissima soccer final, but tennis may derail its bid

The Finalissima is once again in jeopardy. In its first edition after a four-year hiatus, the match between the European and South American champions risks losing its original venue. One of its potential replacements, Miami, faces logistical hurdles in staging the highly anticipated event.

The showdown between Argentina and Spain is scheduled for March 27, originally set to take place in Qatar. However, recent unrest in the Middle East has cast doubt on the venue.

Amid escalating tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran, Qatar was struck by a missile attack, prompting the government to suspend all sporting events, according to an official statement.

In this context, both Miami and London have expressed interest in hosting the game. Yet Miami’s bid is complicated by a scheduling conflict that could rule it out.

Is Miami ruled out as host of the Finalissima?

Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, appears to be the strongest contender to host the clash between Spain and Argentina. But it faces a significant obstacle.

From March 15-19, the venue will host the Miami Open tennis tournament, as it has for the past nine years. To accommodate the Finalissima, the match would need to be rescheduled.

With a capacity of 65,000, Hard Rock Stadium is Miami’s premier venue. By comparison, Inter Miami Stadium seats only 22,000, while Miami Freedom Park-set to open April 4-will hold 25,000 spectators.

London has history on its side

London, meanwhile, boasts a proven track record. The English capital hosted the most recent Finalissima in 2022 at Wembley Stadium, where Argentina defeated Italy 3-0 to claim the trophy, just months before the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Although Qatar has not officially withdrawn, the current international situation makes its role increasingly unlikely. The decision now rests between Miami and London.
