Mets star Kodai Senga’s injury severity confirmed

The New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals by a score of 4-3, but it was not all good news, as they suffered a serious blow when their star pitcher, Kodai Senga, left the game with a visible gesture of pain that anticipated a serious injury for the Japanese ace.

The diagnosis would indicate a strain in the right hamstring, which occurred while covering first base, in a game where the 32-year-old Japanese had an outstanding performance before the injury, pitching 5 2/3 scoreless innings, with just one hit, one walk and five strikeouts.

Carlos Mendoza confirms Senga injury

After the game, manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed that Senga will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, pending the results of an MRI. However, Mendoza was confident that the rest of the team will be able to maintain the competitive pace:

We have people coming in, and those who are healthy now will continue to step up

What happened to Kodai Senga?

The play that caused the injury originated from a throw by Pete Alonso to first base, which led to Senga overexerting himself and straining himself. Visibly affected by the situation, Alonso expressed his regret over the incident:

I still feel terrible because, for me, I was just trying to make a baseball play. I was just trying to help my pitcher

Pete Alonso

“I tried to make the best throw possible. It’s horrible. It hurts to be involved in that. Senga is one of ours here, and it’s a shame. You hate to see someone fall. And yes, it sucks to be part of that. I wish it hadn’t ended like that,” Alonso said

The injury comes at a key time for Senga, who has been one of the most consistent pitchers this season, although he was recently overlooked in the poll for the National League Cy Young Award. Before the game, he led the majors with a 1.47 ERA in 12 starts, with a 7-3 record

How are the Mets doing?

With this victory, the Mets improved their record to 45-24, consolidating themselves as leaders of the National League East Division.

Senga’s status will be closely monitored in the coming days, as his absence could represent a significant challenge for the team at a crucial stage of the season. For now, the Mets will have to find a way to maintain their momentum without one of their mainstays in the rotation.
