New York Mets fans are getting another dose of hope heading into a season that still feels far away, as this very Monday they received an update on the organization’s free-agency roadmap.

The message inside a team that once again fell short is that they will be aggressive this winter. At least that’s what President of Baseball Operations David Stearns made clear, stating they intend to pursue big targets-something that can excite fans but also worry them, because it might come at the expense of retaining key in-house players like Pete Alonso or Edwin Díaz, whose contract situation remains unresolved.
The trades of Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers and the acquisition of second baseman Marcus Semien say a lot-one of them being that the Mets now have different needs, including a clear hole in the outfield.
Stearns intends to make significant changes this MLB offseason, coming off a season in which the team went from division leaders to fighting just to reach the postseason.
Anthony DiComo of MLB.com shared Stearns’ quote that has fans very excited:
“I think anything would be realistic at this point.”
That comment only reinforces the full backing Stearns has from owner Steve Cohen, signaling that as long as the moves align with the club’s long-term goals, that support will continue.
Last offseason they bet big by giving Juan Soto the largest contract in sports history, but now the focus could shift toward trying to retain their own stars (Pete Alonso and Edwin Díaz) while looking for a strong outfielder.
