Losing is never pleasant. Not in any scenario, platform, or sport. And even less so when what is at stake is the top of the division. That is exactly what happened to Kelly Stafford, the wife of Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, after the franchise where her husband plays fell to the Seattle Seahawks last Thursday, December 18.
Kelly Stafford strongly criticized the actions of the referees during the Thursday Night Football game, specifically the calls that were made against the team where her husband plays. In response to that situation, many people came forward to say that her behavior was “classless,” arguing that her public complaints crossed a line and reflected poorly on both her and the organization.
It is worth remembering that the Rams lost to the Seahawks on a controversial two-point conversion attempt that involved a backward pass. The officials ruled that the play could be advanced, a decision that generated widespread anger among Los Angeles fans, including the quarterback’s partner, who did not hide her frustration.
Kelly is very well known for openly criticizing what she considers to be mistakes by the officials. However, those comments consistently attract a great deal of attention, and not in the way she would like. Instead of sympathy, her remarks often spark backlash and fuel negative reactions across social media.
Later, on the day after the game, Friday, December 19, head coach Sean McVay also spoke about the play, this time with a cooler head and a more measured tone.
It’s a technicality issue.”…”You can’t advance a fumble under two minutes on two-point plays or on fourth downs.” He added that officials ruled the play a backwards pass, which allowed the advance. McVay said the rule creates problems. “I do believe that is not something that we want in the game,
McVay told reporters.
Fans react to Kelly Stafford’s comments
The advantage internet users have of writing anything without filter or respect is extremely common on social media. Anonymity emboldens people to say whatever they want, and because of that, many went after Kelly Stafford harshly, unleashing criticism that quickly spread across different platforms.
Although it is also fair to point out that at times the Rams quarterback’s wife takes things several steps too far in her own posts, which often intensifies the reaction she receives and keeps the controversy alive longer than necessary.
One fan wrote,
Kelly Stafford might’ve solidified herself as one of the worst WAG.
Another fan added,
You know what, Lions fans. I get it now.
While yet another person told her,
The Rams complaining about the refs? Their opponents have been flagged for 300 more penalty yards than they have.
Kelly Stafford did not respond to the criticism, perhaps preferring not to do so and instead continuing to involve herself in situations that she herself helps generate, even as the scrutiny and hostility around her public image continue to grow.
