Matt Nagy has not been the offensive coordinator Patrick Mahomes needs to return to glory

Patrick Mahomes is a tremendous player not only for the Kansas City Chiefs, but for the entire league. From the moment he arrived, there was a radical shift at the quarterback position, and that transformation sparked his franchise’s return to the NFL’s elite.

The Chiefs became the most dominant offensive team of recent years, consistently pairing explosive production with defenses that were solid enough to withstand pressure and secure victories that placed them near the top of the standings.

With success also comes opportunity, especially for offensive coordinators who draw interest from other franchises looking to hire head coaches, inevitably leaving gaps for Andy Reid to fill on his staff.

It was in one of those moments that Matt Nagy joined the team, tasked with continuing to support Patrick Mahomes and helping him remain among the league’s best while extending his path toward immortality once his playing days are over.

The numbers reflect Matt Nagy’s work

The Kansas City Chiefs had long been an offense that ranked at or near the top of the NFL, until the last three seasons, which coincidentally align with Matt Nagy’s arrival.

Nagy joined the Hunt family’s franchise shortly before the start of the 2023 season, and although the team managed to reach and win a Super Bowl during his tenure, offensive efficiency has not been sustained.

Despite the issues faced in 2025 with injured and suspended players, the offense has been unable to find the stability it once had, the kind that consistently placed Kansas City among the league’s elite units.

For Andy Reid, this should be a clear warning sign that must be addressed ahead of the next season if Matt Nagy remains on the staff. With several coaching positions already opening around the league, Nagy’s name has surfaced as a potential candidate to lead another franchise.

Under Mahomes, the Chiefs had established themselves as a powerful offense, a trend that stalled following Nagy’s arrival.

  • 2018: 1st
  • 2019: 2nd
  • 2020: 2nd
  • 2021: 1st
  • 2022: 1st
  • 2023: 9th*
  • 2024: 22nd
  • 2025: 23rd

These figures clearly show that since Matt Nagy arrived to supposedly help Mahomes elevate his game, the offense has steadily regressed in yards per play.

Those numbers do not reflect well on Nagy within the organization, nor do they strengthen his case to be hired as a head coach by any team currently without one.

Patrick Mahomes continues recovery from ACL tear

It is worth remembering that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in the midst of recovering from a torn ACL. After suffering the injury on a play against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15, the Chiefs’ season came to an abrupt end.

From that point, the quarterback traveled to Texas, where he was evaluated and later underwent successful surgery. What follows now is a long recovery process, focused on regaining strength and full mobility, with the goal of being completely ready for the start of the 2026 season in September.
