Masters shocker as unusual oversight unexpectedly changes the course of the game

There are moments in golf when the silence speaks louder than anything else. The Masters is known for that kind of quiet where every movement is measured, every whisper matters. But during the opening round of the 2025 Masters, that quiet was broken by a truly unusual moment.

Max Homa, one of the most consistent players on tour, stepped up to his shot on the par-5 8th at Augusta National. Tucked among the trees, he was sizing up a tricky recovery when something strange happened. As he launched the ball back toward the fairway, it struck a man ahead squarely on the backside. That man wasn’t a spectator or a tree marshal, it was a caddie. A caddie who, by all appearances, had no clue Homa was hitting. The camera captured it, and so did Homa’s reaction:

Just days before teeing off at Augusta, Homa parted ways with his longtime caddie and close friend, Joe Greiner. The split, which Homa admitted wasn’t his decision, added a strange emotional weight to one of golf’s most traditional stages.

The ball striking the unaware caddie didn’t just disrupt the shot it disrupted the rhythm. And while Homa managed to salvage a par on the hole and finish the round with a 2-over 74, it was the kind of moment you rarely see in a professional golf tournament.

It was the kind of moment that could happen to anyone. The caddie may have lost focus for a second, but golf pros are trained to bounce back even after a bizarre incident like this.
