Marc Anthony, a close friend of David and Victoria Beckham, talks about their family drama: It’s not the truth

Marc Anthony has made it clear he wants distance from the controversy now surrounding the Beckham family, even as his name remains tied to one of the most painful chapters in their public split.

Speaking for the first time since being mentioned in Brooklyn Beckham‘s explosive statement last month, the Grammy-winning artist pushed back against how events have been portrayed and insisted the story unfolding in public does not reflect reality.

“I have nothing to say about what’s happening with the family,” Anthony, 57, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “They’re a wonderful, wonderful family. I’ve known them since before the kids were born. I’m godfather to Cruz. I’m really close to the family.”

Anthony stopped short of addressing specific allegations, but his frustration with the narrative was unmistakable.

“But I have nothing to say about what happened there,” he added. “It’s extremely unfortunate how it’s playing out – but [how it’s playing out] is hardly the truth.”

The singer found himself pulled into the dispute after Brooklyn Beckham publicly accused his parents of crossing boundaries during his April 2022 wedding to Nicola Peltz Beckham, an event at which Anthony performed.

What had long been remembered as a lavish celebrity ceremony has since become a focal point in Brooklyn‘s decision to cut ties with his family.

In a January 21 statement shared on Instagram Stories, Brooklyn described the wedding as a moment that left him feeling humiliated rather than celebrated. He accused his mother, Victoria Beckham, of disrupting what was meant to be his first dance with his wife.

“My mum hijacked my first dance with my wife, which had been planned weeks in advance to a romantic love song,” Brooklyn wrote.

“In front of our 500 wedding guests, Marc Anthony called me to the stage, where in the schedule my romantic dance with my wife but instead my mum was waiting to dance with me instead. She danced very inappropriately on me in front of everyone. I’ve never felt more uncomfortable or humiliated in my entire life.”

“We wanted to renew our vows so we could create new memories of our wedding day that bring us joy and happiness, not anxiety and embarrassment.”

Wedding moment becomes flashpoint in a wider family breakdown

Further insight into the disputed moment emerged later in January, when wedding DJ Fat Tony appeared on the U.K.’s This Morning programme.

While dismissing exaggerated rumours, Tony confirmed that the sequence of events created visible discomfort.

“There was no slut-dropping, there was no black PVC catsuit, there was no Spice Girl action,” Tony said. “What it was [and] why I said it was inappropriate, as well, was because … it was the timing.”

According to Tony, Anthony was mid-performance when Brooklyn was called onto the stage, at a moment when guests were expecting Nicola to join him for the couple’s first dance.

“Marc Anthony was performing onstage. He then called Brooklyn onto the stage [who] went onto the stage where everyone’s expecting it to be Nicola to go up and do the first dance, then Marc Anthony asks ‘the most beautifulest woman in the room’ to come to the stage and then he says, ‘Victoria,'” Tony explained.

The DJ said the emotional impact was immediate.

“Brooklyn appeared ‘devastated,'” Tony claimed, while Nicola, 31, left the venue “crying her eyes out.”

“Brooklyn‘s stuck there onstage, and then they do this dance,” Tony continued. “Marc Anthony‘s, like, ‘Put your hands on your mother’s hips,’ and it was a Latin thing. The whole situation was really awkward for everyone in the room.”
