Manny Pacquiao’s latest video in the gym sparks controversy and he is compared to Mike Tyson

Manny Pacquiao is back in the spotlight after a 38-second video was released showing him training intensely. Dressed in simple sportswear, the Filipino throws combinations at the punching bag with the same determination that made him an eight-division champion. The footage was shared by Boxing Kingdom with a clear message: the legend is back.

At 46 years old and almost four years out of the ring, Pacquiao is preparing to face Mario Barrios, the current WBC welterweight champion. The fight, scheduled for July 19 in Las Vegas, pits two generations with very different styles against each other. Barrios, 16 years younger, is in top form, riding a winning streak based on his relentless pressure and solid jab. The fight is more than just a comeback: it’s a battle against time.

Another Mike Tyson case?

The short video, while powerful in image, opened the door to an inevitable comparison: Mike Tyson. Before his return against Jake Paul, Tyson also looked in great physical shape during training, showing speed and power reminiscent of his prime. However, when fight day came, age was evident. The energy of the clips did not translate to the ring, and the illusion gave way to reality. Many fear that Pacquiao will follow that same path.

Although he moves with conviction, in the video there are details that worry: the low guard, the loss of mobility and signs of premature fatigue. For an elite fighter, these gestures are clear warnings. Unlike carefully edited workouts, real fights demand sustained rhythm, sharp reflexes and constant adaptation. Facing an active opponent like Barrios will not be the same as shining for half a minute in front of a punching bag.

The line between legacy and risk

The concerns are not limited to physical performance. There were also doubts about the motives behind the return. Although there is no evidence of financial problems, the suspicion persists, fueled by the history of other great champions who returned when they should not have. Fans expressed their fear that Pacquiao will join the list of legends who prolonged their farewell too long.

Even so, among the criticism there were also messages of support. Some fans recognise that power is the last thing to go, and that even though the odds are against him, the Filipino could still surprise. This mixture of scepticism and hope defines the general expectation: no one knows what to expect, but everyone will be watching.

Pacquiao has defied the impossible before. From his days as a flyweight to becoming a global icon, his career has been a succession of unthinkable feats. But boxing does not often offer happy endings, and this time the challenge is different: it is not just about winning a fight, but about preserving a legacy.
