Nearly four years after bidding farewell to boxing, Manny Pacquiao is stepping back into the ring, chasing one more title in a sport he says he simply can’t walk away from.
At 46, the Filipino icon is preparing to fight Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title on July 19 in Las Vegas-a city where Pacquiao built much of his legendary career.
Pacquiao last fought in 2021, suffering a decision loss to Yordenis Ugas in what many thought would be the final chapter of his professional journey.
Not long after that bout, Pacquiao confirmed his retirement through an emotional video tribute to his career and fans. “I never thought that this day would come,” he said. “Boxing gave me a chance to find a way out of poverty.”
However, the pull of the sport never quite faded. After dabbling in exhibitions, most notably a 2024 bout against Japanese kickboxer Rukiya Anpo, Pacquiao now returns with full intent to reclaim a championship, setting up a high-profile clash with the younger and rising Barrios, who currently holds the interim WBC title.
Pacquiao says love for boxing never left
At a recent press conference in Las Vegas, Pacquiao spoke openly about the reasons behind his decision to return.
“I’m coming back because it’s my passion,” Pacquiao said. “I’ve been gone for four years but I always think about boxing. I really missed it.”
His words reflect a deep-rooted emotional connection to the sport, one that has defined much of his life and legacy. While his age may suggest that his best years are behind him, Pacquiao‘s hunger to compete hasn’t diminished.
In fact, it’s the same drive that led him to world titles across eight different weight divisions-a feat no one else has achieved.
The upcoming bout against Mario Barrios, 17 years Pacquiao‘s junior, is more than just a test of skills. It’s a symbolic battle between eras, as Pacquiao attempts to once again defy expectations against a fresher, physically primed opponent.
Barrios, known for his aggressive style and stamina, has been building his reputation in the welterweight division and sees Pacquiao as both a threat and a legacy fight.
This fight will also mark a historic milestone. Just weeks before the bout, Pacquiao will be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame on June 8.
Few fighters have returned to championship contention after receiving the sport’s highest honor-Pacquiao could become the first Hall of Famer to win a major title post-induction.
