However, every story has a winner and a loser, and in this case, it was the team led by interim head coach Mike Kafka that fell by a score of 34-27, thus ending any chance of making the playoffs, a fact that greatly angered player Malik Nabers.
Detroit didn’t take the lead until the first play of overtime against the New York Giants. But they still found a way to win on Sunday. It took a titanic effort from Jahmyr Gibbs and a career-long field goal from Jake Bates to pull it off. Gibbs capitalized on the first play of overtime, returning 69 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
WR Malik Nabers harshly criticizes his team after playoff elimination
Nabers ripped into his team on social media after their tough overtime loss to the Detroit Lions last Sunday. In a now-deleted post, Nabers singled out the Giants for a messy sequence near the end of the fourth quarter-one that put the Lions in position to kick a field goal that ultimately forced overtime.
“Sometimes I think they’re making us lose on purpose!” he wrote. “Why can’t you, man, just throw the ball instead of running it so you burn through two timeouts? Then you don’t kick the field goal??? Then they have to come down and score!! Football common sense!! Am I missing something?” Nabers was referring to a late drive the Giants made in the fourth quarter, in which backup quarterback Jameis Winson nearly sealed the upset at Ford Field.

Despite the storm, there are reasons for optimism. New York is the world’s largest media market, brimming with passionate fans. The Giants boast a potential franchise quarterback in Jaxson Dart, who was the Rookie of the Year, a talented running back in Cam Skattebo, and a wide receiver who could rank among the top 10 at his position alongside Nabers.
In addition, they have promising defensive pieces like pass-rushing prospect Abdul Carter. The Giants’ future hinges on finding the right coaching staff. With players like Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence, and Kayvon Thibodeaux on defense, the potential is there. They just need leadership that can maximize that talent and return the Giants to winning ways.
