Mahomes and Kelce fall to Herbert: Chargers defeat Chiefs in São Paulo

The NFL kicked off with an international spectacle in São Paulo, Brazil, where the Los Angeles Chargers surprised everyone by defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 27-21. The game, which marked the start of the 2025 season, made it clear that the Chargers are ready to seriously compete for the AFC West.

Justin Herbert was the undisputed star, leading a precise and aggressive offense that dismantled Kansas City’s defense. With accurate passes and flawless game reading, Herbert made it clear he’s going all in this year.

Mahomes and Kelce far from their best

In contrast, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce had a night to forget. Mahomes failed to impose his usual rhythm, and Kelce barely made an impact on the scoreboard. The Chiefs’ offense was clearly affected by the absence of Rashee Rice, suspended for six weeks, and the injury to Xavier Worthy, who left the game after a hard hit to the shoulder.

These absences leave Mahomes with few reliable options in the passing game, which was evident in a second half lacking rhythm and punch. The Chargers’ defense capitalized on every mistake and closed out the game smartly, running down the clock to secure the win.

Chiefs start with doubts and pressure

With this loss, the Kansas City Chiefs begin the season 0-1, something rare in the Mahomes era. Beyond the score, the worrying part is the state of their offense: without Rice or Worthy, and with Kelce far from his best, the team faces a tough week ahead before hosting the Eagles.

Pressure on Mahomes is mounting, and the coaching staff will need to find quick solutions if they want to avoid letting the season slip away from the start.

Chargers gain momentum and aim high

Meanwhile, the Chargers celebrate a win that could set the tone for their campaign. With Herbert inspired and a well-executed offensive scheme, the Los Angeles team is shaping up as a serious contender.

Next week they visit the Raiders, and if they maintain this level, they could establish themselves as the new division leaders.
