Magic Johnson praises Lakers’ Luka Doncic trade but raises eyebrows with conditioning comment

NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson couldn’t contain his excitement after the Los Angeles Lakers secured a blockbuster trade for Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic. However, in his enthusiastic social media posts, Johnson made a comment that left fans and analysts raising their eyebrows.

Taking to X , Johnson celebrated the Lakers‘ acquisition of Doncic, calling it “the biggest trade I’ve seen between two superstars essentially in their prime.” He highlighted Doncic’s impact, saying, “Luka Doncic will definitely make the Lakers a championship-contending team. He’ll take pressure off LeBron because of his scoring ability and playmaking and will make every Laker better!”.

Magic’s excitement comes with an unexpected jab

However, Johnson’s praise took an unexpected turn when he added, “LeBron James will be a positive influence on Luka, teaching him his championship mentality that includes taking his conditioning seriously.”

The remark appeared to be a subtle dig at Doncic’s well-documented fitness concerns, especially since reports from ESPN recently suggested the Dallas Mavericks had “major concerns” about Doncic’s conditioning and lifestyle, potentially affecting his ability to reach his full potential.

A game-changing trade for the Lakers

Despite the offhand comment, Johnson remained optimistic about the Lakers‘ future with Doncic. The 25-year-old guard, who’s been averaging an impressive 25.7 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks over 42 games this season, joins forces with LeBron James in what could be a transformative partnership for the franchise.

“This is a great long-term move for the Lakers franchise after LeBron retires,” Johnson noted, emphasizing the team’s vision beyond their current championship window. The trade, which sent superstar Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks as part of a three-team deal, is being compared to the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ headline-making acquisition of Shohei Ohtani-a move that led to a World Series win in Ohtani’s debut season.

While Johnson’s conditioning comment may have sparked debate, it’s clear that expectations are sky-high for Doncic in Los Angeles. Lakers fans are eager to see if the young superstar can thrive under LeBron’s mentorship and silence any lingering doubts about his fitness as he leads the team into a new era.
