On July 29, 1990, the Balaidos stadium hosted a historic concert by Madonna, in one of the last stops on the European tour of Blond Ambition. That night, with a packed stadium, the artist donned the Celta shirt with the number 5, which was then usually worn by the defender Espinosa. This moment, captured by photographer Victor de las Heras, became an iconic image in the history of the club and the city.
After the performance, the garment was lost, and has been missing ever since. The president has written an open letter to the artist to help her find it. Celta now reveals that it had been searching for it privately for years, but the investigation stalled some time ago.
This is how the Vigo club’s announcement read: “Thirty-six years later, it is appealing to all Celta fans to locate the shirt, with the intention of incorporating it into its historical archive. For Celta, it is a unique and unrepeatable garment that is part of its emotional heritage. For this reason, the club is grateful for any relevant information on the whereabouts of the shirt that Madonna wore on the stage at Balaidos. To this end, the club has set up a link to receive information related to the garment.”
Tribute before playing against Real Madrid
In an attempt to exhaust all avenues of investigation, Celta have also published an open letter from their president, Marian Mourino, addressed to Madonna, in case she herself could provide relevant information or even keep the shirt.
For this reason, the club will dedicate “a gesture of affection” to the artist in a special action at the Balaidos stadium this Friday at 20:45, just before the start of the match against Real Madrid and taking advantage of the great showcase that this match represents. All this is part of the great marketing campaigns that the club has launched since the arrival of Marian Mourino as president and in which music has played a special role, such as the centenary anthem created by C. Tangana.
