In a move that sent shockwaves across the NBA, the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster deal that no one saw coming. While fans are still processing the stunning trade, new reports suggest that the decision wasn’t solely about on-court performance it was also fueled by growing frustrations within the Mavericks organization regarding Doncic’s conditioning and weight management.

According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Dallas GM Nico Harrison had serious reservations about offering Doncic a supermax extension worth $345 million. The two sides had been heading toward a record-breaking five-year contract extension in July, but Harrison abruptly changed course, opting to reshape the franchise’s future.

Conditioning issues linked to injury concerns

Sources close to the Mavericks revealed that Doncic’s struggles with maintaining peak fitness had become a point of contention. Reports claim his weight ballooned to the high 260s this season, raising concerns about the long-term impact on his durability. The Mavericks reportedly believe that Doncic’s conditioning issues have directly contributed to his recent injuries, affecting both his performance and availability on the court.

“Luka Doncic’s constant conditioning issues and concerns-his weight ballooned to the high 260s this season-they believe that is directly attributable to the injury issues that he’s had,” MacMahon reported.

While Doncic’s talent is undeniable, the Mavericks seemingly bet against his long-term durability, believing his physical struggles could hinder his ability to maintain an elite level of play. Now, with a fresh start in Los Angeles, the question remains: will Doncic’s move to the Lakers be the wake-up call he needs to address these concerns, or will history repeat itself on a new stage?
