At just 13 years old, Luka Doncic left Slovenia to join the youth academy of Real Madrid Baloncesto, beginning a journey that would quickly reshape European basketball.

What followed was a rapid rise through one of the sport’s most prestigious development systems and, eventually, a historic run at the professional level.

After arriving in Madrid in 2012, Doncic spent six seasons progressing through the club’s academy. He collected team titles and individual honors at every age group, cementing his status as one of the brightest prospects in Europe. His breakthrough moment at the youth level came in May 2015, when he led Real Madrid to the Junior EuroLeague title and earned MVP honors for the tournament.

Luka made history with Real Madrid

By that point, Luka was already training with the senior team under head coach Pablo Laso. On April 30, 2015, Laso gave the teenager his professional debut, making him the youngest player in Real Madrid history to appear in a Spanish league game. It marked the beginning of a new chapter for both the club and European basketball.

Doncic‘s development accelerated quickly. By the 2017-18 season, at only 19 years old, he had become the best player in Europe. He led Real Madrid to its tenth EuroLeague title in Belgrade, delivering performances that earned him EuroLeague MVP, Final Four MVP and a place on the All-EuroLeague First Team. That same season, he also captured the Spanish League championship and was named ACB MVP.

Winning three MVP awards in a single season underscored the magnitude of his dominance. Luka had not only fulfilled the promise he showed as a teenager but had also broken records and redefined expectations for young players in Europe. His six-year run with Real Madrid laid the foundation for what would become a global career, but his time in Spain remains one of the most impressive early chapters in modern basketball history.
