Luka Doncic massive MVP season means trouble for the Lakers plan to keep LeBron James

Luka Doncic‘s rapid ascent with the Los Angeles Lakers is reshaping not only the franchise’s present identity but also its long-term direction, and the early returns suggest the organization’s bold shift toward the Slovenian superstar is paying off in authoritative fashion.

With LeBron James nearing the twilight of his legendary career, Los Angeles has effectively begun the transfer of power, and Doncic‘s production, leadership and consistency are validating that decision on a nightly basis, for NBA fans to watch.

Luka currently leads the Lakers in scoring, ranks fourth on the roster in assists and continues to stand among the league’s top rebounding guards, a workload that underscores how central he has already become to everything Los Angeles does on both ends of the floor. Over his last seven games, he has scored at least 33 points in every outing and has eclipsed the 40-point mark twice, reinforcing the sense that his rise in Los Angeles is not a temporary surge but a sustained takeover.

The NBA Western Conference Player of the Week

That dominance was formally recognized when Doncic was named NBA Western Conference Player of the Week for games played from Nov. 24 through Nov. 30, marking his first such honor as a Laker and the 15th weekly award of his career. During that three-game span, he guided the Purple and Gold to a perfect 3-0 record while averaging 37.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 10.3 assists, all while shooting efficiently from every level of the floor.

The week included statement victories over the Clippers, Mavericks and Pelicans, a stretch that offered both star power and emotional weight, particularly against Dallas, his former team. The week opened with a 43-point performance against the Clippers in a 135-118 NBA Cup win, when Doncic added nine rebounds and 13 assists to go with seven made three-pointers.

That night also pushed him past Magic Johnson for 10th place on the Lakers‘ all-time list for 40-point regular-season games, a remarkable milestone considering his short tenure in Los Angeles. Two nights later, he carved up Dallas for 35 points and 11 assists, and he closed the week with 34 points and 12 rebounds in a win over New Orleans as the Lakers improved to 15-4 on the season.

A brilliance that comes with being a little careless

Doncic‘s brilliance has not come without imperfections, as he can be aggressive to a fault at times, most notably with the ball. His nine turnovers in his most recent game served as a reminder of the risks that come with such a high-usage role, yet those mistakes rarely swing outcomes against Los Angeles.

The Lakers‘ position near the top of the standings reflects how consistently Doncic‘s positives outweigh those occasional missteps, especially when games tighten late and the offense tilts fully into his hands. For the Lakers front office, this surge reinforces the long-term vision that has gradually placed Doncic at the center of the franchise.

LeBron James remains an iconic presence and a productive contributor, but the rhythm of the offense, the emotional energy of the roster and the nightly expectations all increasingly revolve around the 26-year-old guard. It is a natural evolution for a franchise that has historically passed the torch from one generational figure to the next, and Doncic is proving more than capable of carrying that responsibility.
