Luka Doncic just achieved what LeBron James has not been able to with the Los Angeles Lakers

Luka Doncic has already accomplished something in a Lakers uniform that even LeBron Jameshasn’t managed to do during his time in Los Angeles, and it is another reminder of just how historic the Slovenian guard’s scoring run has become.

Doncic, who currently leads the NBA at 35 points per game, has now recorded eight straight 30-point performances, putting him in exclusive franchise company alongside Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor as the only Lakers to ever reach that benchmark. It is a staggering achievement in a franchise defined by legendary scorers, and it has delivered a powerful statement about Luka‘s place in the organization’s present and future.

The timing of the streak has been especially significant for a Lakers team navigating one of the toughest stretches of its schedule. Los Angeles is 2-2 in a six-game run against teams with winning records, yet it has remained flawless in the moments that matter most, winning tight games in Toronto and Philadelphia last week and improving to 8-0 in games that were within five points in the final five minutes.

Lakers are also doing it on the defensive side

The Lakers also boast the league’s top-ranked clutch defense, allowing just 36 points in 42 possessions in those situations, which has allowed Doncic‘s scoring explosions to translate directly into wins rather than empty numbers. While Luka has been rewriting the record book, LeBron James has continued to define his impact in a different way.

In Toronto, it was James who found Rui Hachimura for the game-winning three-pointer, a pass that ended James‘ record streak of 1,297 consecutive games with at least 10 points. He immediately started a new streak two nights later in Philadelphia, finishing with 29 points while scoring the Lakers‘ final four field goals, including a catch-and-shoot three to give Los Angeles the lead for good and a step-back jumper to seal the game.

Even as Doncic dominates the scoring headlines, James remains deeply intertwined with every critical moment. The on-court chemistry between Doncic, James and Austin Reaves remains a work in progress, and the numbers reflect that complexity.

The Lakers manage to steady themselves

Even when Doncic has been sidelined, the Lakers have managed to steady themselves, going 4-2 in the games he has missed. Reaves, in particular, has thrived in that expanded role, averaging 40 points on an outrageous true shooting percentage above 71 percent in five of those six games.

His steady year-over-year scoring growth has culminated in the biggest leap of his career this season, strengthening the Lakers‘ ability to absorb short absences from their stars without collapsing offensively. Still, the story that continues to hover over everything in Los Angeles is what Doncic is doing on a nightly basis.

Eight straight 30-point games in a Lakers uniform is not just another hot streak in the regular season; it is a historical marker that even LeBron James never reached with the franchise. For a player already leading the league in scoring, it reinforces the idea that Doncic is not merely carrying offensive responsibility but actively reshaping the identity of the Lakers attack.
