Luka Doncic has the Lakers believing again: But is it enough for the playoffs?

The ball left Luka Doncic’s hands with everything hanging on it. For a split second, it felt like one of those shots that usually drops. It didn’t.

The Los Angeles Lakers saw their nine-game run come to an end against Detroit, and just like that, the conversation around them shifted again.

Not dramatically, but enough to bring back a familiar question. How much of this is real?

For weeks, they had been quietly stacking wins. Not always dominant, not always clean, but effective.

According to NBA data, they’ve gone 22-7 in clutch games, which says a lot about how they’re closing.

It also raises another question. Is winning close games a strength, or is it a warning sign?

Lakers: A team that competes, even when it shouldn’t

The loss to Detroit Pistons kind of summed it all up.

They were down by 16. The offense stalled. Key players like Marcus Smart and Rui Hachimura weren’t available. And still, they found a way to get back into it. That’s been the pattern.

They don’t always look sharp. They don’t always look complete. But they stay in games longer than expected. And more often than not, they give themselves a chance. It’s not dominance. It’s persistence.

Luka Doncic has taken over the tone of this team

Everything feels different when Doncic is on the floor.

Not just because of the numbers, although those are there. Analysts at ESPN have pointed to his offensive impact all season, especially in late-game situations. But it’s more about control. Pace slows down, decisions get sharper, and suddenly the game feels like it’s being played on his terms.

That shift has changed the roles around him.

LeBron James, now 41, is still producing, but he’s not carrying every possession anymore. Austin Reaves looks more comfortable as a secondary piece. Luke Kennard spaces the floor. When available, Smart adds defensive stability.

Even Deandre Ayton, who has been inconsistent for stretches, has started to simplify his game. Protect the paint. Finish near the rim. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s not perfect. But it’s starting to look intentional.

The part that still doesn’t fully convince

Here’s where things get tricky. For all the late-game success, the overall picture still feels incomplete. According to Basketball Reference, the Lakers sit in the middle of the league defensively. That’s usually not where serious contenders live. And around the league, people notice.

There’s still a sense that in a long playoff series, especially against deeper teams, these gaps will show up. Depth, consistency, defensive discipline. Those aren’t small things.

Add to that the physical load. LeBron continues to push beyond expectations, but time is there. Doncic, even in his prime, carries a heavy offensive burden and faces constant defensive pressure late in games. That kind of wear adds up.

Something is forming… even if it’s not finished yet

What makes this version of the Lakers interesting isn’t what they are today. It’s what they’re hinting at.

“He’s done this before,” is something you hear more often now when people talk about Doncic. Back in 2024 with Dallas, he carried a team further than expected by controlling games possession by possession.

This feels similar. Not identical, but familiar. There’s structure starting to show. Players are adjusting. The team feels more connected than it did earlier in the season.

That doesn’t mean they’re ready to contend for a title. They’re probably not there yet.

But they’re no longer easy to dismiss. And right now, that might be the most important shift of all.
