Liverpool fans explode at their manager for not including a star in the starting lineup against West Ham

The tension at Anfield could be felt from the very start of the match between Liverpool and West Ham United – and not precisely because of the opponent. The release of Arne Slot’s starting lineup generated criticism across social media after the Reds did not include Rio Ngumoha in the starting XI.

The decision allowed Joe Gomez to begin the match, something that was heavily criticized by supporters who believed the young Ngumoha was the correct choice. However, Slot has been clear that the club does not want to place excessive pressure on the player and prefers to develop him at a measured pace, aiming to manage expectations surrounding a talent already being labeled as “the new Raheem Sterling.”

Rio Ngumoha: 15 minutes of pure magic to silence doubts at Anfield

Once the match was already leaning in Liverpool’s favor, Arne Slot decided it was time to give minutes to the academy’s crown jewel. Rio Ngumoha, just 17 years old, entered the pitch as a substitute for Hugo Ekitike and, in barely fifteen minutes, demonstrated why his reputation continues to grow rapidly.

The young winger brought the crowd to its feet with a fearless display filled with confidence and individual technique.

The defining moment came when Ngumoha received the ball on the left wing. Showing no signs of nervousness, he took on Mateus Fernandes with an electric dribble and drove directly toward the penalty area guarded by the experienced Aaron Wan-Bissaka. With a sequence of movements that forced the Irons defender to retreat cautiously, the teenager created space to unleash a shot that pushed goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to his limits.

Although he touched the ball only six times, the efficiency and visual impact of his performance were undeniable. Ngumoha is not simply searching for minutes – he is seeking protagonism. His ability to keep defenders nearly twice his age under control is a testament to his football maturity.

With Liverpool set to face two consecutive matches against Wolves over the next six days, today’s performance places Ngumoha firmly in contention for a possible starting role, particularly in next Friday’s FA Cup clash or even Tuesday’s Premier League fixture. At Anfield, conversations are no longer centered on absences but on the seemingly limitless ceiling of a teenage star who shined in the 5-2 victory over West Ham.
