LeBron James passes the torch and is left out of the starting lineup for the first time in two decades

The 2025-26 season has been far from what LeBron James envisioned for what could be his final dance in the NBA. After 23 seasons in the league, he has left an unmistakable mark across every stop of his storied career.

However, it now appears that time has finally played its card against the ‘King,’ limiting his ability to perform at peak level and reducing his chances of producing the dominant statistics and achievements that have defined him since his arrival on professional courts.

LeBron James suffers a harsh setback from the public

The years do not pass without consequence. Performance inevitably declines after a certain age, and LeBron is now 41. No matter how committed he remains to elite training and conditioning, the body demands a different rhythm, and for James, that moment seems to have arrived, whether he wishes to accept it or not.

Younger players have begun to surpass him in one-on-one matchups. He appears slower against opponents in their early twenties, and regardless of the immense talent that has flowed through the NBA, time ultimately restores balance.

With this reality in mind, it is understandable that James’ minutes now look different in pace, speed, and reaction time when compared with the new generations. Perhaps for that reason, fans decided he would not be a starter for the NBA

All-Star Game scheduled for February 2026.

The showcase featuring the league’s elite will take place at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. Five players per conference were revealed during the league’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day coverage on Monday, January 19, 2026.

For LeBron, this represents a significant blow. He had started the All-Star Game for 21 consecutive years.

The selection of NBA All-Star Game starters

Fans were responsible for 50 percent of the vote to select All-Star starters, with media accounting for 25 percent and current players contributing the remaining 25 percent.

As a result, James did not receive enough overall support to secure a starting role. Still, he could be named among the reserves during what is his 23rd season in the league.

Those players will be announced on Sunday, February 1, and will be selected by league coaches. The game will be played on February 15 using a round-robin format that will pit the United States team against the rest of the world.

There will be 16 players from the United States selected, along with eight international players.

It is worth remembering that during the 2025 season, LeBron was selected as a starter but was forced to sit out due to foot and ankle issues.

One factor that may have cost him a starting spot this year is that he has missed several games since the beginning of the season because of ongoing sciatica problems.

Despite those health concerns, the ‘King’ is averaging 23 points, six rebounds, and seven assists in the games he has played. Now, he must wait to see whether coaches include him among their selections or if he will be left out of the All-Star Game entirely.
