LeBron James’ agent puts Lakers in another awkward spot while defending his client

Rich Paul has once again found himself at the center of NBA discussion.

The Klutch Sports founder and longtime agent of LeBron James sparked fresh controversy after addressing the Los Angeles Lakers‘ struggles on his Game Over podcast, comments that many fans felt deflected blame away from his client.

The timing did not help. Los Angeles Lakers are coming off another heavy defeat, a 128-106 loss to the Detroit Pistons, continuing a worrying trend.

The Los Angeles Lakers have yet to record a single-digit loss this season, and head coach JJ Redick has repeatedly questioned the team’s effort level.

While LeBron James is widely viewed as the locker room leader, Rich Paul argued that defensive responsibility should not fall on an aging superstar.

“Normally it’s not the superstar guy that is going to be your all-defensive guy,” Rich Paul said.

“Even in LeBron James‘ case, people get on him about the defense today, but we’ve seen it. If you have to depend on a 41-year-old, you’re in trouble anyway.”

Statistically, the Los Angeles Lakers‘ defense has been a real concern. In December, the team posted a defensive rating of 122.4, second worst in the NBA.

LeBron James, now 41, finished with a defensive rating of 113.6 points allowed per 100 possessions, the lowest of his career.

Fans push back on Paul’s narrative

For many supporters, those numbers make Rich Paul‘s comments difficult to accept. As one of the highest-paid players in the NBA, LeBron James still commands major expectations, especially given his $52.6 million salary.

Fans were quick to respond online, accusing Rich Paul of using his platform to shield LeBron James rather than offer honest analysis.

One comment read, “So this podcast is now just a propaganda machine for LeBron… like he would be objective at all being his agent and all.”

Others questioned the logic of not relying on a veteran star who plays heavy minutes: “You depend on a 41-year-old when he plays 32 mpg and takes $54M from your cap room. But you don’t hire common sense at Klutch Sports.”

Some took the criticism further, suggesting retirement might benefit the franchise: “That’s why LeBron James needs to retire so the Los Angeles Lakers can use what he gets paid for younger, better, well-rounded role players for Luka Doni and Austin Reaves.”

The debate even reopened old arguments, with one fan concluding: “He’s right, it’s not normal to be this good on both ends. Which is why it’s painfully obvious that Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time.”

This is not the first time Rich Paul‘s public defense of LeBron James has irritated Los Angeles Lakers fans. As his podcast continues, many expect similar reactions, especially if the team’s struggles persist.
