Late Colts owner Jim Irsay’s death sparks federal investigation: FBI probes substance use and doctor ties

The death of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has taken a serious new turn, with federal authorities now stepping into a case that has already raised troubling questions across the NFL and medical communities.

What was initially treated as a private tragedy has evolved into a matter of national interest following extensive investigative reporting and the involvement of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

According to The Washington Post, a federal grand jury has been convened and a subpoena has been issued by the FBI as part of an ongoing inquiry into Irsay‘s death.

The subpoena reportedly seeks records related to Irsay‘s medical treatment, his use of both prescription and illegal substances, and his relationship with Dr. Harry Haroutunian, the physician who was overseeing his care at the time of his death.

The presence of a grand jury signals that federal prosecutors are actively examining whether criminal charges could ultimately be pursued.

The Colts organization has acknowledged awareness of the investigation but has confirmed it has not received a subpoena or direct contact from federal investigators.

While the team remains publicly distant from the inquiry, the implications of the case extend well beyond football, touching on medical ethics and oversight of high-profile patients.

Unanswered questions surrounding medical care

It was previously reported that Irsay was being treated by Haroutunian, described as a luxury recovery doctor, who prescribed opioids and later ketamine.

Haroutunian also signed the death certificate, listing ‘cardiac arrest’ as the cause of death. Notably, no autopsy or toxicology testing was conducted, a detail that has drawn scrutiny from medical experts and legal analysts alike.

The doctor in question previously denied any allegation of wrongdoing, insisting he cared for Irsay “as a brother”.

“I dedicated 18 months of my life to try to care for him… as a brother,” Haroutunian told the Post in August. “We did everything we could to make him as comfortable as possible.”

Independent medical professionals have claimed that the absence of toxicology testing in cases involving complex drug regimens can leave critical gaps in understanding the circumstances of death.

Those gaps now appear central to the federal investigation.

Report: A long battle with addiction

Per The New York Post, Irsay had a long struggle with addiction and alleged that he misrepresented the status of his relapses in the final years of his life.

Relapse is known to be a common issue for prescription drug addicts and it can often be hidden, particularly among individuals with significant wealth and access to private medical care.

When Irsay died in California, Beverly Hills police found him in what was described as a hospital-style bed setup inside a residence.

Officers were informed that he had been battling chronic health issues, and police later indicated they found no immediate evidence pointing to an overdose.

“There was no evidence that our detectives saw that made them suspicious that it was an overdose,” a report read.

However, the FBI‘s involvement suggests that federal authorities now view the circumstances through a different lens.

With a grand jury examining records and relationships tied to Irsay‘s final months, the case may now rest on how medicine and prescription practices are applied.
