Lamont Roach Jr. opens up about NYSAC’s controversial ruling in favor of Gervonta Davis

Although a controversial story was written on March 1 between Lamont Roach Jr. in his fight against Gervonta Davis, a new page is being written in this drama after the fighter opened up about his version of what happened that night of March 1, 2025 in New York.

The fight was even until the ninth round when Tank went down on one knee and the referee did not count the incident as a knockdown, so the judges ended up declaring a draw, causing the indignation of Roach Jr. at the result.

The decision that outraged Lamont Roach Jr.

Gervonta Davis managed to leave with his WBA lightweight title, while Lamont Roach Jr. had to go through a bitter experience in the ring at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. In a recent interview with Andre Ward on the podcast ‘All The Smoke Fight’, Roach Jr. opened up about what he really felt about that verdict.

In Lamont’s words, the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) told him after the result: “Yes, we screwed up. But someone has to take the blame… it wasn’t going to be him [Gervonta Davis].” For Tank, this was how the NYSAC admitted its guilt without doing anything about it, as in his view it was like: “Okay, we missed this… But they just say, ‘Okay, but we’re not going to overturn it’.“

The Washington fighter claimed he needed the NYSAC to own up to its mistake, but that simply didn’t happen: “We’re going to apologize and give you your flowers. But you’re not going to get what you want,” Roach said in the interview with the former world champion.

“Steve Willis didn’t make any statement. I’m not going to lie, man. That was from him, how sad,”

Due to this controversy, some media outlets have reported that talks are already underway for a possible rematch between Roach Jr. and Tank Davis, tentatively scheduled for June in Las Vegas, although this has not yet been confirmed by either of the two opponents.
