Lamine Yamal looks to LeBron James for inspiration as Barcelona aims for a comeback against Atlético in the Champions League

Hope is the last thing to die, and Lamine Yamal knows it. After Barcelona’s tough 0-2 loss to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals, Hansi Flick’s team must stage a comeback and win by a margin of three goals or more in the second leg. Difficult, but not impossible. And the 18-year-old has made that clear.

Lamine surprised social media by changing his profile picture to an iconic image of LeBron James, a gesture laden with competitive symbolism serving as a message to his fans and rivals.

Yamal’s gesture symbolizes Barça’s confidence in a comeback

The forward had posted a message on his Instagram Stories after the defeat, warning: “This isn’t over, Culers.” Now, to demonstrate his unwavering faith in the Blaugrana team, Lamine has made a significant change to his profile.

The young winger hadn’t had a profile picture on this social media platform for quite some time, but he has now decided to replace it with an image of four-time NBA champion LeBron James, a choice with a very special meaning.

With just over 48 hours to go before Tuesday’s second-leg clash at the Metropolitano and following his standout performance in the derby against Espanyol, Lamine chose a profile picture of King James with the title he won with the Cavaliers in the 2016 Finals after one of the greatest comebacks in basketball history, having turned around a 3-1 deficit in the Finals against Golden State.

That final was shaped by the context in which it was played: a Warriors team that had completed a historic regular season with 73 wins and only 9 losses, only to ultimately succumb to their rivals. The result turned that matchup into one of the most memorable comebacks in elite sports.

This precedent inspires Yamal to dream of achieving a similar result against Cholo Simeone’s team, and with this choice, Lamine also makes clear his winning spirit, ambition, confidence, and a mindset focused on one goal: to stage a comeback.

Goals by Julián Álvarez and Alexander Sorloth put Lamine and Barça on the brink, as they were unable to recover from Pau Cubarsí’s red card in the 44th minute. The situation is demanding, as the Blaugrana face a major challenge in Europe and need a response following an adverse result.

In this scenario, the young winger takes center stage not only on the field, where he is already decisive, but also off it, setting the emotional tone for the team.

Now, looking ahead to the second leg, Atlético Madrid will try to defend its lead and take advantage of home-field advantage when they host Yamal and company at the Metropolitano on April 14 at 3:00 PM ET-a team that has made it clear they will fight to overturn the defeat at Camp Nou.
