Lamar Odom’s lawyer left in difficult spot by former NBA star’s behavior

Former NBA star Lamar Odom is pushing back against the charges stemming from his recent arrest in Las Vegas, as his legal team has officially entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

Odom‘s attorney, Kevin Coburn, appeared in court on Tuesday without the two-time NBA champion present. During the hearing, Coburn formally entered the plea and requested a bench trial rather than a jury trial. The court has since scheduled proceedings to begin on July 7.

The case stems from Odom‘s January 17 arrest, when authorities stopped him on suspicion of driving under the influence. According to police reports, the former Los Angeles Lakers forward was allegedly driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph and was cited for multiple violations.

Despite the allegations, Odom has consistently denied being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident. Shortly after his arrest, he spoke publicly about the situation, maintaining that he had not consumed alcohol or narcotics before getting behind the wheel.

However, reports from the scene suggest otherwise. Law enforcement officials claimed Odom showed signs such as bloodshot eyes, and his vehicle reportedly carried a strong odor of marijuana. He also allegedly admitted to smoking marijuana earlier in the day, though he later suggested that a passenger may have been responsible for the smell inside the vehicle.

Authorities further noted that Odom struggled during field sobriety tests. In one instance, he reportedly failed multiple attempts to complete a basic coordination task. Officers also asked about his medical history during the stop, prompting Odom to reference past health issues in a manner that reportedly raised further concerns.

Legal battle looms as Odom maintains innocence

As the case moves forward, Odom faces three charges: driving under the influence, excessive speeding, and improper lane usage. His legal team’s decision to opt for a bench trial indicates a strategy that places the outcome solely in the hands of a judge rather than a jury.

In a public statement following the arrest, Odom emphasized personal accountability while still maintaining his innocence regarding the DUI charge. He stated that he is committed to growth and learning from the experience, noting that he has worked hard to rebuild his life in recent years.

“I remain committed to my continued growth,” Odom said. “I’ve worked hard to rebuild my life, and taking responsibility is an essential part of that process.”

The case has drawn additional attention given Odom‘s history both on and off the court. A former Sixth Man of the Year and key contributor to multiple championship teams, he earned over $100 million during his NBA career and became a well-known public figure, including through his past marriage to Khloé Kardashian.

In the weeks following the arrest, Odom reportedly completed a 30-day treatment program in Los Angeles, signaling an effort to address personal challenges and continue his recovery journey.

He has also remained in the spotlight for other reasons. In a recent podcast appearance, Odom shared a vivid dream involving his late former teammate Kobe Bryant, describing it as a powerful and emotional experience. According to Odom, the dream included a cryptic message that left a lasting impression on him.

While those remarks generated headlines, the focus now shifts back to the courtroom. With a trial date set, Odom will soon have the opportunity to formally contest the charges and present his side of the story. As the legal process unfolds, the outcome could play a significant role in shaping the next chapter of his life, both publicly and personally.
