The Baltimore Ravens have moved swiftly to define the next era of their franchise, officially appointing former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter as their new head coach.
The hire reunites Minter with an organization he knows well and places him in charge of guiding Lamar Jackson and a Super Bowl-caliber roster into its next phase.
Minter, who visited the Ravens on Wednesday, agreed to a five-year contract, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN.
He replaces longtime head coach John Harbaugh, whose exit earlier in January 2026 marked the end of a highly successful tenure.
For Minter, the move represents both a return home and a significant professional milestone, as he takes over a team with championship expectations from day one.

That background now fuels expectations that he can address the postseason shortcomings that plagued the Ravens in recent years despite consistent regular-season success.
Past links to Baltimore
Minter originally joined the Ravens staff in 2017, beginning as a defensive assistant before steadily earning greater responsibility.
By 2020, he had risen to defensive backs coach, gaining valuable NFL experience and establishing relationships throughout the organization. That foundation makes his return particularly appealing to a franchise that values continuity and institutional knowledge.
After leaving Baltimore, Minter expanded his profile across both college football and the professional ranks. He served as defensive coordinator at Vanderbilt in 2021 before teaming up with Jim Harbaugh at Michigan in 2022.
One year later, he helped guide Michigan to a national championship, further cementing his reputation as one of football’s brightest defensive minds.
When Jim Harbaugh accepted the head coaching role with the Los Angeles Chargers, Minter followed, leading a defense that quickly earned league-wide respect.
There is also a clear parallel to another recent Ravens success story. Minter shares a developmental throughline with Mike Macdonald, whose rapid rise culminated in leading the top-seeded Seahawks to the NFC Championship within two seasons.
Bisciotti, DeCosta gamble on Minter delivering
Baltimore is betting that Minter can deliver a similar impact.
