Lakers’ Deandre Ayton detained in Bahamas under suspicion of marijuana possession

Deandre Ayton‘s turbulent season took an unexpected turn this week when a brief airport detention in the Bahamas thrust him into headlines for reasons unrelated to basketball.

Although the situation was resolved without charges, it added fresh scrutiny to a player already navigating questions about consistency and effort in Los Angeles.

The incident occurred Tuesday at Lynden Pindling International Airport, where Ayton was temporarily detained on suspicion of possessing a small amount of marijuana.

In the Bahamas, marijuana remains illegal, raising the possibility of serious consequences had authorities confirmed it was in his possession. His lawyer, Devard Francis, moved swiftly to clarify the circumstances.

“The investigators saw that the actual very small amount of marijuana wasn’t in Deandre’s bag, but they still went through their investigations, and he was released expeditiously,” Francis told Reuters, adding that the substance was found in someone else’s bag.

No formal statement has been issued by the Royal Bahamas Police Force or the Los Angeles Lakers. The matter appears closed, but its timing is far from ideal.

Performance scrutiny continues in Los Angeles

Even before the airport incident, Ayton’s season had been under the microscope. The former No. 1 overall pick is averaging 13.2 points and 8.5 rebounds in 28.2 minutes per game, numbers that reflect steady production but fall short of the expectations that once surrounded him.

The criticism centers less on raw statistics and more on perceived effort and defensive impact. Ayton’s physical tools remain undeniable.

At 7 feet tall with a 7-foot-6 wingspan, he has the profile of an interior anchor. Yet that dominance has not consistently translated on the defensive end.

Advanced metrics reinforce the concern. In non-garbage time minutes, the Lakers are 4.1 points per 100 possessions worse defensively when Ayton is on the floor.

His rebounding numbers have dipped from previous seasons, turnovers have increased, and his defensive presence has not provided the stability the team envisioned.

The airport detention may ultimately prove insignificant in the larger picture. Still, for a player trying to shed narratives about effort and reliability, even a brief legal scare adds another layer of distraction.
