Lakers considered an NBA Finals contender following trade deadline, but it’s not because of Luka Doncic

The Los Angeles Lakers have officially entered the NBA Finals conversation, but not just because of Luka Doncic. While the blockbuster trade for the superstar guard was a massive move, analysts believe the team’s latest addition, Mark Williams, might be the missing piece that turns them into true contenders.

Williams, a 23-year-old center acquired from the Charlotte Hornets, brings elite rim protection, rebounding, and a perfect lob target for Doncic and LeBron James. His presence not only fills the gap left by the Anthony Davis trade but also strengthens the Lakers‘ defensive identity heading into the postseason.

Mark Williams gives the Lakers what they needed most

NBA analyst Kevin O’Connor was among the first to react to the Lakers‘ acquisition of Williams, calling it a “shocking” but “perfect” move for their long-term success.

“Mark Williams is an absolute steal for the Lakers,” O’Connor wrote on X. “They needed a defensive anchor, and now they have one. He’s an ideal fit alongside Luka and LeBron, and his upside is huge. The injuries are a concern, but at 23 years old, this is a gamble worth taking.”

Williams is averaging 15.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks this season while shooting 59.7% from the field. His ability to protect the paint and finish around the rim gives the Lakers a new dynamic they were previously missing.

Bill Simmons of The Ringer echoed a similar sentiment but issued a cautious reminder: “Mark Williams is legit… when he plays.” Injuries have been a major factor in his young career, limiting him to just 19 games last season due to back issues. However, the Lakers are confident in his health moving forward.

The final piece for a championship run?

With Williams in the starting lineup, the Lakers now have a well-balanced roster. He’s expected to start in the frontcourt alongside LeBron James and either Rui Hachimura or Dorian Finney-Smith, while Doncic and Austin Reaves form the backcourt. Their bench depth also remains strong with Jaxson Hayes, Gabe Vincent, and Jarred Vanderbilt.

The Lakers had been searching for a center after trading Davis, but according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, it was the Hornets who initiated the talks. Charlotte reportedly coveted Lakers rookie Dalton Knecht, which ultimately led to the deal.

If Williams stays healthy, this trade could be the move that finally puts the Lakers over the top in the Western Conference.
