Khalil Shakir beams with delight as Buffalo Bills star and wife heroically save 19 dogs on brink of death

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir was all smiles as he greeted and played with 19 dogs he helped rescue from death row.

The touching scene-captured on video by Nickel City Canine Rescue-showcases the 25-year-old embracing the dogs with warmth and enthusiasm as they arrived at the rescue, safe at last.

These 19 dogs were transported from Clarke County Animal Shelter, which had planned to euthanize them due to lack of space. The rescue center posted that for the first time, the dogs “slept with full bellies, warm blankets, and peaceful hearts. No more fear, no more uncertainty.”

Shakir’s presence was joined by his mother, Mona Tuamoheloa-Shakir, and two of his best friends. Among the many examples of his community engagement, this rescue effort stood out for its immediate impact.

Just a day prior, on August 30, Shakir’s foundation hosted its second annual pet adoption event in Amherst, NY-about a 20-minute drive from Buffalo. At that event, Nickel City Canine Rescue mentioned the incoming dog transfer.

According to the center, Shakir’s “eyes lit up” and “he said he would love to come help again.”

Eight local rescue groups participated, and 19 dogs were adopted that day, 18 of them through Nickel City Canine Rescue. Some of Shakir’s Bills teammates were also in attendance.

Reflecting on the event, Shakir said, “The main goal is obviously to find as many little cute dogs homes as possible.”

Shakir becomes a community hero

This isn’t the first time Shakir and his wife, Sayler, have partnered with Nickel City Canine Rescue. In May, the couple helped rescue 26 more dogs.

That same time, Shakir adopted his own dog-named Daphnee, now called Missy-who also was rescued from Clarke County Animal Shelter and quickly became known as a “good luck charm.”

The rescue organization expressed deep appreciation: “We truly cannot put into words how grateful we are to Khalil & Sayler. Ever since adopting from NCCR, they’ve never stopped giving back.”

The video of Shakir with the recently rescued pups has received nearly 20,000 likes and generated heartfelt comments from fans and community members.

One user wrote: “Khalil and his family is making such a difference in the lives of so many dogs. Mom has to be proud of her son and his huge heart!”

Another added: “If only there were more people like the Shakirs! Two humble, loving humans who truly value and love our abandoned and beloved canines! … We appreciate everything you do!”

Shakir-entering his fourth season with the Bills-was drafted out of Boise State in 2022. In February, he signed a contract extension through 2029, securing his presence in Buffalo for years to come.

By physically helping transport 19 dogs to safety, and previously adopting and advocating for rescued animals, he demonstrated the power of using athletic platform for good.

The joy he shares with those pups speaks volumes about compassion, community, and the difference one individual can make-both in football and in the lives of the most vulnerable.
