A homicide investigation is unfolding in Los Angeles after former NFL defensive lineman Kevin Johnson was found dead Wednesday morning near a homeless encampment, casting a somber shadow over a career that once placed him on football’s biggest stages.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials confirmed Johnson, 55, was discovered near the 1300 block of East 120th Street in the Willowbrook neighborhood.

Authorities reported blunt force trauma and stab wounds, leading detectives to treat the case as a homicide.

According to statements shared with local outlets including the Los Angeles Times and KTLA, investigators are canvassing the area for witnesses and reviewing nearby surveillance footage.

Johnson, a Los Angeles native, carved out a professional football career in the 1990s after playing college football on the West Coast and in Texas.

Drafted by the New England Patriots in 1993, his NFL path included time with the Minnesota Vikings practice squad and the Oakland Raiders before his most productive stretch came in Philadelphia. With the Eagles, Johnson played 11 games during the 1995 season and appeared in two playoff contests, followed by another 12-game season in 1996.

Tributes from former friends and acquaintances surfaced online following news of his death, many acknowledging the challenges Johnson faced later in life.

One former high school friend shared a message reflecting on their distance over the years and struggles with addiction.

Remembering Kevin Johnson’s Life Beyond the Field

Johnson‘s NFL career concluded after the 1997 season with the Raiders, where he appeared in 15 games before being released the following spring.

He later continued playing in the Arena Football League with the Los Angeles Avengers, staying close to his hometown. Former teammates described him as a powerful presence on the defensive line and a player who worked relentlessly to remain in the league.

Investigators emphasized that no conclusions have been drawn regarding the circumstances of Johnson‘s death.

On the same day his body was discovered, a separate law enforcement incident occurred roughly a mile away involving an unrelated suspect. Authorities stressed there is no indication the two cases are connected.

As the investigation continues, Johnson‘s death has prompted reflection across the NFL community, highlighting the complexities athletes can face after their playing careers end.

For a player who once competed under bright stadium lights, the final chapter unfolding in Los Angeles has left many remembering both the athlete and the person beyond the game.
