Karol G to headline historic NFL opener in Brazil: What to know about the Grammy Award winner

The 2025 NFL season kicks off with more than just a clash between two elite teams, it’s a full-scale global celebration. On Friday night, the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers will meet in São Paulo, Brazil, in a Week 1 matchup that marks several firsts for the league.

Not only is it the NFL’s first international game of the season, but it’s also the first NFL game to be streamed exclusively on YouTube, ushering in a new era of sports broadcasting.

To mark the occasion, the NFL has invited Latin pop and reggaeton superstar Karol G to headline the halftime show, an announcement that adds even more excitement to an already groundbreaking event.

Karol G brings Latin power to the NFL stage

Born Carolina Giraldo Navarro, Karol G is one of Latin music’s most powerful forces. With over 30 billion YouTube views, multiple Grammy wins, and chart-topping albums, she’s a natural fit for an international spectacle like this.

Her music blends reggaeton, Latin pop, cumbia, and even elements of salsa and funk, allowing her to connect with fans from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.

In her own words, Karol G expressed deep pride in being chosen for this milestone event. “I’m so excited to be part of YouTube’s first-ever NFL live broadcast,” she said. “I’ve watched many NFL halftime shows over the years, and now having this opportunity to bring my music to this global stage means the world to me.”

Her latest album, Tropicoqueta, released in June 2025, is a vivid celebration of Latin identity. The project became her fourth straight No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart and her third Top 3 entry on the Billboard 200. It also achieved the biggest streaming debut for a Latin female artist this year, reinforcing her place at the forefront of the genre.

Far from being just a performance, her halftime set is positioned as a cultural moment, a celebration of Latin heritage on one of the world’s biggest stages.

“With my latest album, I set out to represent the many facets of my Latin culture,” Karol G added. “I’m excited to bring that same energy and pride to this global stage.”

The cultural significance doesn’t stop there. The national anthems will also reflect the event’s international spirit: Brazilian star Ana Castela will perform the Brazilian anthem, while American jazz musician Kamasi Washington will deliver the U.S. anthem, fusing two musical worlds before kickoff.

Chiefs vs. Chargers: A rivalry goes global

The on-field matchup is just as compelling. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will look to defend their dynasty, even without suspended wide receiver Rashee Rice. His absence shifts focus to new faces like Xavier Worthy and JuJu Smith-Schuster, while tight end Travis Kelce remains a constant threat.

The Chargers are led by Justin Herbert, who hopes to finally translate regular-season success into postseason wins. His primary weapon will be Ladd McConkey, a breakout star from his rookie season. Defensively, Los Angeles boasts elite talents like Khalil Mack and Derwin James, making them a dangerous team on both sides of the ball.

Yet history favors Kansas City, who consistently find ways to outlast their division rivals, even when the odds seem balanced.
