The Chavez Carrasco family is facing one of the most difficult moments in its life. The problem is not in the ring, but before the federal authorities where Julio Cesar Chavez Jr faces criminal charges for arms trafficking and criminal involvement with a drug cartel that, for the US government, is considered as a terrorist group. The last process was to link him to provisional release, so he left the prison in Hermosillo on Sunday.

In response to the situation, “El Cesar del Boxeo” reacted to the situation his son is going through

I am happy, this is a process, my son has to clarify all the doubts that the government has. I want to make it clear that my son is not a criminal, he does not belong to a cartel, he does not traffic weapons, he does not sell drugs, I ask the authorities to be fair. My son is in preventive freedom and from outside we are going to fight the case.

highlighted the great Mexican champion who has admitted that he knew all the drug traffickers.

Where is Chavez Jr while the process against him continues?

While investigations are being carried out prior to the verdict, Chavez Jr. will be at home with his family in the city of Culiacan, Sinaloa, while the process against him takes place. “I haven’t seen him or spoken to him for a long time,” said his lawyer Ruben Fernando Benitez, who told Ciro Gomez Leyva’s program that the boxer “is resting and recovering from the trauma that this situation meant”.

It should be remembered that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was detained by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents in Los Angeles on July 2, 2025, after his fight against Jake Paul in Anaheim. Officially, the arrest was due to the expiration of his visa and inconsistencies in his residency application. However, he was considered a threat to national security due to alleged links to the Sinaloa Cartel.

What criminal charges does JC Chavez Jr face before the Mexican authorities?

Since January 2023, the Attorney General’s Office issued an arrest warrant against him for organized crime in the form of arms trafficking, based on an investigation initiated in 2019. It was not until 2025 that the Mexican authorities took action and requested his deportation when they learned of his arrest on US soil, which took place on August 18 and he was imprisoned in the maximum security prison in Hermosillo, Sonora

The second hearing in the case was held on August 23, virtually, from Cefereso No. 11, to avoid a possible attack during his transfer. Judge Enrique Hernandez Miranda decided to charge the boxer, but surprised by granting him provisional release on bail, even though these crimes usually merit preventive detention. The Chavez family’s lawyer, Ruben Fernandez Benitez, mentioned that Chavez Jr. does not represent a social or flight risk and was granted provisional release thanks to the “progressive and very guarantor” vision of the judge.

Chavez Jr’s restrictions in Mexico

After granting him parole, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was not stripped of his passport, however, he must comply with strict precautionary measures: not to leave Mexico without judicial authorization, attend all hearings and periodically appear before the authorities.

Benitez explained that of the 21 pieces of evidence presented by the FGR, only nine directly mention his client, and none proves his active participation in organized crime. On November 24, he will have a hearing before the district judge to determine his legal status.
